Welcome to Gunnutz. You're going to have to handle a bunch of rifles and get what feels right. Don't buy a Remington 710 or 770, they're a POS. Remington 700 and model sevens are all good. Tikkas are good, but have a plastic bolt shroud and magazine. Browning X bolts have a plastic mag also. Many people are bothered by this, others could care less. It's a matter of opinion, what you like.

If you are considering buying used, check out HuntingBC.ca.
"Island Redneck" has a really nice Lefty 700 BDL in 270 for sale. $600 incl. scope.
I seriously considered buying it but am leaning more towards a 243 now.
I have a Lefty 700 BDL in 30-06 and they are very, very nice rifles.
Classic wood combined with excellent accuracy.

do you know if the ruger comes in synthetic??

No. Up until last year Ruger made a LH SS Laminate model though. You might find a retailer with old stock.

That's the route I'd go. Or look and wait for one of the old LH Winchester M70s... Though the M700 CDL is a decent rifle too.

Have fun shopping!

"...better than the Savages..." Not for the money asked. It's really a personal preference. As in, do you like Fords or Chevy's?

If you want a bolt, I'd say the Remington 700 is great.

I prefer the new BAR longtrac though so that get my vote. $1000, so a little more than you wanted to spend.

Browning X-bolt is now available in left hand and that will be my next purchase. I currently have lefties in Savage, Winchester, Browning and Remington. All my rifles shoot 1" groups or better and have no complaints with any of them. For new guns I really like the combination of fit, finish, and weight of the Browning.

dont over look Savage - have two now in 243 and 30.06. have had 270 and 7mm all shoot decent prices

well i finally made it to the store to shoulder a few and have found the remington 700 x bolt and t3 to be the best fit. with the 700 fitting like a glove to only problem is i've heard reports of the remingtons misfiring when the safety is turned off. Has anyone heard of this or can shed some light on it

The trigger that "supposedly" had the problem isn't on their rifles anymore.
