This was probably discussed somewhere else. I have trouble with the search engine in CGN. I could never get it right. It seems that starting a new thread is faster and less of a PITA.

Oh! back to the question. So do I call up the CFC to register my new barrel swap form a 18.5" to a 12.3 " Dlask? I still have considerable overall length with my standard Ruger stock. Is this a fairly standard procedure that I won't get any confusion from them? All I need is for them to reactively freak out and suddenly turn my non-restricted to a restricted. :runaway:

Thanks in advanced guys.

as long as your over all lengh is srill legal,..No the barrel does not need too be registered,..only the frame,or reciever....so put your new barrel on and have fun.

You DO need to contact the CFC to have your registration certificate updated.

Note that your current registration card will have on it Barrel length
470mm or greater (ie: your original 18½ barrel)

What I did was; send a registered letter to the CFC informing them of the change. Note all the relevant information already on your registration slip and advise what needs to be ammended.
In this case the Barrel length portion.
Mine now reads Barrel Length less than 470mm

Make sure to inform them that the rifle is still longer than 26" in order to maintain its non-restricted status.

Thanks for the advice. Will follow your procedure as indicated. All I need is a game warden to give me grief when he notices that the barrel length does not jive on my registration card.

Or over the phone???

I re-registered my 870 from a frame only to a firearm with an 18.5" barrel over the phone. Never even had to talk to a verifier, the lady on the phone found the FRT and did it up right then. I have also corrected serial numbers with only a phone call. I don't think there is much that requires anything more formal than a call at this point.

Called in today and had it done.

It seems like some confusion on their side. First person at CFC said it was prohibited and I was transferred to the RCMP after I challenged her assumption. At the RCMP, things went smoother. I had a to speak to verifier to explain my situation as I made it clear, charmingly to her, that I also knew something about the law regarding this matter. She called my back to find out the manufacturer of barrel that was being replaced. I guess she forgot that little detail.

Thank god it's done! Now my daughter can go to into the woods and git her some rabbit with her lil'SBR.

I thanks you all for sharing your wisdom and experience. What a great support group we have here :). I am ton45, I have a gun addiction and I will always be an addict R:d:.

i figured i'd better get this done, since i've swapped two barrels to shorter than factory.

so i phoned them, and got it all changed (or so i thought!), and i recieved a faxed document stating that they wanted more information, specifically the name of the company from which i obtained the new, shorter barrel. they do not seem to care about the actual manufacturer.

i haven't yet responded, but i purchased both privately, one is a ruger barrel, and one a green mountain. both are the "as manufactured" length.

anyone else get this run-around?

well, i phoned them today, and gave them the information they required. i told her that i obtained both barrels via private sale. i also told her that they were both "as manufactured", one from ruger, and one from green mountain.

she says "oh, green mountian, i like those ones!". so perhaps there are a few enthusiasts working for the government! :D

everything is all fixed up hopefully, we'll see when i get my new registration certificates if i still have non-restricted rifles.
