After searching the forums I cant seem to answer my question so I will ask it here.
When doing the initial sighting in on a new sks do you set the rear sight to the "genereal" setting (The cyrillic character that looks like an upside down U) or do you set it to 1 as in 100 meters and do your initial sight in from 100 meters? the reason I ask is because I recall reading that the "genereal" setting was actually set at 300 meters.
Thank in advance for your help.

The very back setting is a "battle" setting, 300 meters. Its purpose was in any condition of battle, the last notch was a known setting. Going up, the increments start at 100, 200, ect.

I keep mine at the 100m setting, and it will zero at 25 and 100 meters with a 125 grain bullet, as it was designed to do.

OK. Forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand the mechanics of this. When the slider is all the way down, the rear sight sits completely flat, right? So how does that set it for 300m? If you slide the selector up to the 300m mark, the rear sight is clearly inclined much higher. I don't get it...

Please bear with me as I haven't been shooting for very long.

When it is *really* all the way down - (not on "1", but on "П" position), it actually goes back up (standing on a little step there), which is exactly the same as "3" setting.

No,your sights "follow" point of contact in order to correct. i.e: right of target, move windage right. If shooting high, raise elevation on front post.

Aramir;1 is the lowest setting{100m},all the way back{toward shooter}is the battle setting which is the same elevation as the 3{300m} Why they chose 2 settings for 300m is beyond me though......military logic/intelligence?

It's a "battle" setting; when in a hurry or under fire, you know that by pulling that slider full to the rear, you're at 300 yrds setting. No need to have a look to adjust.
Now fire center of mass or aim at the belt level. You're assured of a disabling hit between 25 and 300 yards. That's military thinking.
PP.

Most people say it's a field of view thing. So that your target inside the 300 meter mark is fairly un-obsrtucted view when shooting irons so that if you miss you can pick it out and adjust with out adjusting 1's sight.

Although with this round & rifle. If you sight in the upper torso @ 100 meter's you can probaly pick off the targets feet.
