Picking up the track

I know a lot of us pick up tracks during hunting season and follow them to varying degrees of success.

Who does it in the offseason ? Seems snowshoeing is a lot more interesting when following a moose track in big woods country .

Just for the hell of it My wife and I picked up a Moose track from a logging road today and followed it to a small lake where we hooked back farther up the road as we were running out of time, the track was about a day old and I didnt' have hope in actual in seeing the moose but as we aproached the bog / swale that leads to the lake we crossed more moose tracks leading in and out of the area. Seems I might have to go back sometime

The only fresh tracks I found were in the active logging areas but we didnt' really have any interest snowshoeing through cutovers......maybe next time.

A moose track is fresh if while you are smelling the hoof print turds are falling on your head . . .

I find that moose alter their habits and locations in mid winter. Sighting moose and their tracks this time of year has little bearing to where they are in the fall during hunting season, IMO. It is nice to see, if nothing else as to know that they're still around.

Saw a pack of 6 wolfs last night on the lake right infront of my house. The wife and I desided to follow the tracks this morning. Not more than a km from where we saw them we found a moose kill. A few days old by the looks of it. No wolfs to be seen, one eagle and a half dozen ravens on it though.

Before we got flooded out in 2005 the rabbits played hell with my fruit trees. After a fresh snow I would get on the track of the Jack rabbit and fallow it to the maker. It was great exercise and good practice for shooting the .22-250. By the end of that winter I had no rabbit problems.

I track jacks on snowshoes and coyotes. Good success on the jacks. Haven't yet been able to catch up to a coyote. Seems I'm gettin old. I track deer year round and do a lot of scouting. This was the first year I didn't take one opening day. I past up a 4 point and a spike tho

I realise this and Im not necessarily scouting for Fall. There have always been a good number of moose in that area. More so now with the active logging, some of the loggers cant believe they havent' hit one yet.

Ill go back in a few weeks, was also checking if there was a wolf pack in the area......they cant be far.

Haven't yet been able to catch up to a coyote.

Been pushing yotes for many years by tracking them and only three have waited for me. Yotes have a few tricks when they know you are on them.
I have had more deer wait and see what is following them and if you push them far enough they sure make use of rivers.
I have tracked a few moose in your area Path but unless they are yarded nearby you can find a lot of woods with no tracks of any kind.

Finding one would be a bonus...mostly good exercise and good time spent outdoors....from all the reports from the loggers the yard may be in that area....IF i get a chance next time I will track where they are cutting...as they are mostly concentrated there ot eat but god only knows how far they go after they eat.
