What's the approximate value of a semi-only Sig 550?

Asking for a friend who has a couple that he might be looking to sell.

I know they are prohib, and he has the correct license.

Thanks,

Probably not very high, considering the full size Swiss Arms are easily obtainable and are non-restricted. Might find a good value with a collector, but I think the best bet would be to strip them and sell all the parts.

Agreed. Parting them out is a possibility, I imagine the lowers would be worth a fair amount (for the trigger groups). I'll run it by him next time I see him.

I looked at one in Montana used harly at all, really nice and it had an $800.00 price tag. It was at a sporting good store so thats what there worth there.

That was probably a Sig Sauer 556. It's not the same as a Sig 550. The Swiss made 550's go for up to $10,000 stateside (high demand, can no longer be imported).

Definitely had to be a 556. Genuine SIG 550 rifles routinely fetch $10,000-$15,000 and the price continues to rise due to US import restrictions.

Here in Canada, all 12(x) firearms have had their value dramatically reduced simply because there are a limited number of buyers available, made all the worse by the fact that said group continues to grow smaller every year.

Parting out the 550 will probably get him the biggest return, but it will still only be a fraction of the price of a new Classic Green, etc...

In fact I have seen them go for close to 15,000 in the US.

Damn, I guess my sources in the U.S. were looking at the "Pre Obama" prices. :p

Do you know if it might be possible to export some of the parts to the U.S.?

I know you couldn't export the whole rifle, but if you were to strip everything down and sell all the parts individually, would that be possible? (I should probably email the BATFE about that... because I be someone stateside would pay quite a bit for genuine SIG 550 parts...)

The major reason in the price reduction for prohibited rifles is the fact that the owners can't even take them to the range anymore...

Yah, if the guy that owns the two Sigs could take them to the range still, I don't think he'd be interested in selling them. Such BS too, aren't you glad the Firearms act is here to keep us all safe... :bangHead:

This is my advice, although I think you'll find that the parts will be worth quite a bit. Close to the value of a new rifle.

- Bolt Group $300ish (Good for spare parts)
- Rear Sight Complete $150ish (All parts stripped from the Upper)
- Complete Front End $1200ish (Barrel and Gas System good for someone who wants to convert a restricted carbine)
- Complete Lower $1000 (Good for a spare, trigger group etc, stock, pistol grip)

I think those are comfortable prices and would give him a return of around $2500-$2600. Of course, these estimates are assuming that the parts are in great shape.

Yah, I was thinking that too.

I'm also looking at the possibility of exporting the upper receiver to the U.S., maybe as a barreled receiver with the bayo lug removed. It all depends on if that is possible, and if it would be worth the trouble.

As for condition, they were imported in around '93 I think, and weren't used all that much after they went prohib in '95. Based on this, I'd say they're very good to excellent.

What about exporting it to another country, or even back to the country of origin? Might be less hassle than parting it out. The prices are high in the U.S. as these simply cannot be imported into the U.S. as complete rifles, parts yes, complete no.

That's also a possibility. At this point, I'm just trying to find out what his options are, and how much he can get for it. Ideally, if he parts out both rifles and exports the receivers, I'm hoping he'll be able to get enough to buy two Classic Green rifles.

Upper is considered a "non-sporting" firearm and can't be imported into the US except if permited for law enforcement or government agency use. We can have domestically produced non-sporting firearms all day long but just can't import them after 1989...hence the 556
