Savage 10 ba extraction issue*solved*

Alright update, it works like a charm with live ammo! Apparently the barrels/chambers in these things are very close or better to some match ones according to one o the guys at the range, and they usually don't like snap caps or brass that has been fired out of another rifle because of the small tolerances and that I should be happy this is the case lol. So I guess all is good. Thanks again to all who chimed in.

How can you possibly have a brand new rifle sitting in the safe for several months without firing it? That is worse than looking at presents under the tree as a kid.

I did read the whole thread... you actually sent a new rifle back because you couldn't get a snap cap to extract and didn't even try a real round in the chamber?
 
What can I say, i bought it a while ago, its been f'ing cold here, combined with no scope and a desire to purchase 2 more guns b4 I get married, aka lose all rights to all of my money, ha ha, so i intend on buying a scope in march/april then I will try it out.

Assuming your Savage is like mine, it won't eject a snap cap because a snap cap is too long. If you watch what happens as you withdraw the bolt slowly, the ejection pin will start rotating the case off the extraction clip. What happens then is the "bullet" part of the snap cap will hit the side of the receiver, as it hasn't cleared the ejection port yet. It then falls off the extraction clip and lies in the bottom of the receiver. This doesn't happen in a (much shorter) spent casing, because the casing clears the ejection port and is flipped out of the reciever.

I view it as a feature on mine, not a bug, because I prefer live rounds and misfires to stay in the receiver.

That said, there are a number of threads about savage bolts and problems with ejection, with a variety of fixes, if you start seeing the same thing with casings.
 
yep, also came with wrong size screws for assembly and a well used bolt. Seemed normal that if all my other .308's are ok with snap caps that this one should be too. But I guess you knew all that:rolleyes:
