Tacticool .22 Options?

I am looking to build a PRECISION .22 semi auto rifle that will be appropriate for target shooting 200-300 meters. Kind of like a savage model 10 with HS precision stock, scope and bipod, but in a .22. Accuracy will likely be my bottom line.

I'm looking for a heavy barrel, adjustible stock and trigger, and mag fed.

What are my options. Does anyone know fo any retailers that would sell this type of set up as a package?

If I have to go to a custom build, which I think is likely, what actions should I consider. 10/22 Obviously...what else is out there that I should be looking at.

Thanks for the suggestions.

So just to confirm your requirements are:

Tacticool
Very accurate out to 200-300 meters
Heavy Barrel
Adjustable Stock
Adjustable Trigger
Mag fed

Did I miss anything?
How much do you want to spend?

How much do you want to spend?

Yes ... that is the question!

For what you want you are best off buying the parts separately and slapping it all together yourself.

Barrel .. contact Mystic Player for a Shilen Barrel (or a Dlask if your not using Target ammo)??
Stock .. Boyds Tacticool .920 shipped from the States
Receiver .. Dlask DAR22 with built in top rail.
Scope ... CGN - EE or Mystic
Trigger .. OEM with Drop in Timney from Mystic as well ... or .. Volquatsen 2000 or KIDD from Rimfiresports dot com.
Complete Bolt Kit .. Kidd or VQ.
Complete Charging Handle .. Kidd or Tactical Innovations
Any other associated parts (screws, vblock, bedding kit etc) .. rimfiresports dot com.

That's just my 2cents on the build :D ;)

I'd like to keep it under a thousand bucks, but given my penchant for going high end, I don't necessarily hold myself that limit. I'm mostly in the dreaming stage right now, so not really sure what to expect.

An acceptable group size at 300 meters would probably be in the vacinity of 12 inches or better. I intend on using match grade ammo.

Wind would definitely be an issue, but thats the point. This is meant to be a cost effective training rifle to get used to handling wind so as to avoid having to train extensively with my .338LM, which costs around $1.50 every time I pull the trigger. And range time for the .338lm at 1000-1200 yards is limited. I know there is no substitute for the real thing, but this is my 80% solution.

Semi auto isn't really a show stopper. I'll probably end up going with a mag fed bolt action the more I think about it.

Thanks for the reponses, I've got a lot more research to do now. Keep the ideas coming

A bolt action with an aftermarket barrel will be inherently more accurate than a semi. Take a look at these threads from Mystic Precision on long range precision rimfire shooting:

After alot of looking round, and a bit of playing around with a few on the range, I think I am going to go the bolt action route.

Just saw the Ruger Mark II TRR-SR, I think it will fit the bill, at about the right price. Anyone own one of these, how do they shoot?

Anything else out there that is comparable off the shelf?

I know there is always the custom built route...

Not a Ruger.....Savage Mk II TR

TRR (only difference is the included rail)

SR versions have a threaded barrel.

I highly recommend savage 93 series if u want to reach 200 yards and beyond.few of my friends and I picked each picked up one and we all like it. Here is my 93r17

i bought that Mk II TRR recently at LeBaron, but haven't shot it yet (needs a scope and pod to come in). i've read great reviews on it, and savage has a reputation for accuracy.

a few days ago, though, i shot my buddy's savage BTVSS (or whatever, stainless bolt action with a thumbhole stock) and another buddy's Vostok single-shot. MASSIVE difference to the Vostok's favour, boringly accurate at the short ranges we were shooting at, silly light trigger, felt damn good. probably would cost well over a grand to buy new / used.

the mark 11 heavy barrels are downright scary accurate with the right ammo. try cci std vel for plinking and lapua/sk or eley for serious target work. Any .22 is only as good as the ammo you feed it.
with the right ammo golf ball sized tagets can be hit out past 100 yards. but not 200-300at least with me doing the shooting.
Best advice is buy a box or two of every ammo you can find and find what your rifle likes then buy few bricks and have fun.

Well you can mod up a Ruger 10/22 with what you want, and it can be cheaper than the listed stuff. But it's still not going to be cheap. You might want to make some compromises.

Now another recommendation. For long range shooting The Thompson R55 benchmark while not tacticool will shoot with a quality bolt gun at 100 yards. 1 moa at 100 yards 5 round groups actually. CCI standard ammo. But it's not tacticool. Right out of the box though with no mods it will do this. The only problem is they don't make them anymore. Also they aren't cheep and that's if you can find one. Still cheaper than modding a 10/22 though.

10/22 Boyd's stock or Hogue will run you around $100 mark, a new barrel $165-200 (Dlask-GM). I'd keep the regular receiver, and a $40 mod to the trigger. A cheap bolt buffer and the hex screw. Going economy this will still run you around $600.

Some pictures:

Target 10/22 on top, Remington 597 middle, Thompson R55 bottom. These are in stock form.

Ruger 10/22 tacticooled. Regular 10/22 receiver/trigger (will mod the trigger), Ghillie Tan hogue stock, Dlask 16.5" fluted barrel plus reworked Levang compensator (not needed but looks cool). About $600 before taxes.

Keep in mind Ruger also sells a Tactical precision rifle version too. I didn't want the black stock, was looking for a fluted threaded barrel as well so I went my own way.

Here's a picture. Note I have lower rings now so it's perfect. The rings in this picture were a bit too high. Haven't shot it much yet and still have the trigger to get done. Also the bipod was one I had. Get one with the notches for the legs. About $80 if you go with a harris knock off instead of the original.

Yup Falcon. 4-14x ml16 reticle. They work well for rimfires. Parallax down to indoor ranges too. I actually have the bigger 4.5-18x on the Thompson. Good all around scopes especially for rimfires.
