The longest shot

OCTNOV115.jpg

This doe in '08. 120-130m according to my GPS. Federal Fusions from my Ruger M77 in .308

We just dont get the opportunity for long shots here in central Ontario. I was pushing over some hardwood ridges and as I crested one I looked around and saw a nice rock to rest on for a few mins. As I sat down and looked around I thought to myself "Gee, this is a good spot for a rest, might even see a deer here". I was essentially looking over an intersection of 3 ridges with a small stream in the bottom. I wass sitting for about 10 seconds when she popped out of the bottom and started trotting up the hill.

I took two shots at her, and am unsure which hit her, although I believe it was the 2nd. The gun jammed after the 1st (oil build up in the chamber) and she just stood around and looked. She was moving well for the 2nd shot.

Upon recovery, I had taken out the heart, but she still managed to go almost 100m before she died. Amazing they can that far lacking a vital organ.

I was out all day hunting opening day Moose season. Never saw anything and desided to head home. "wanted to get home before the wife" My drive way is 5 km long and passes a lake. As I was driving passed the lake I looked over and there was a nice bull moose on the edge of the lake. Took out my 7m Rem Mag got down on one knee put the crosshairs on him thought it looked an easy shot. So I squeazed one off. The moose lifted his front right leg and started hobling off. WTF shot to low??? Chambered another round and squeased off another. Moose did not seem to flinch the second time.

So off I go to track him thinking to myself WTF did I do! and how could I have missed. I walk down the lake shore to where he was standing counting every step 600 paces hhmmm..... did not seem that far. Start towards the tree line following his tracks and just before the tree line there he is dead. second shot went in just behind the front shoulder, found the bullet just under the skin on the other side.

Now I know a bunch of you are going to rag on me for taking that shot. But since then I have started practising with my 7 mil feel quite confident out to 500 yards also bought a range finder so I can make a better decission.

Up until this moose my longest shot was 225 yards

I can hear the ethic police coming............. Can't believe their not here yet:evil:

long range shooting can be both ethical and unethical depending on the shooter, equipment, weather, and animal behavior. i'd say it is ethical to take long shots if you have the equipment and know what you're doing. but, it's not ethical for the guys that take 2 shots a year to "zero" their rifle at 100 yards before moose camp. there's a big difference between a well equipped and skilled shooter attempting long shots and a novice with poor equipment taking pot shots.

that said, i'm almost always hunting in the bush and shots are usually under 100 yards. i think i'm still waiting to bag my first animal PAST 100 yards. it's not that i've been missing, i just like to let them get close;)

p.s. on a serious note, I shot a tuktu(caribou) with a 150gr powerpoint in my M14 at 300 yards on range finder for my longest hunting shot ... hit it mid-section ... it took a couple steps and fell over.

i shot a nice 10 point on the prairies at 553 yards measured with a range finder and the following year at 452 a big 8 point, also shot a few V BULLS at 900 meters lol...

Quebec in 2007, I took a caribou at a lasered 427 yards, .300WinMag with 180gr Fusion ammo. We were seeing very few animals, and on the fourth day I was watching one not-huge but very nicely shaped bull moving on a diagonal course quartering towards me. I laid on a big boulder, rested my rifle on my pack, and ranged him when he was at his closest point to me. I had practiced a lot at 300 yards back home, and had shot a few rounds at camp at 400 yards to confirm the third line on the ballistic-plex reticle. Despite the fact that the bull was stationary, the wind was calm and the rest was dead-solid, I had to argue with myself to take the shot at an actual animal. I finally figured: why practice if not for this? Took the shot, killed the bull...and I've spent the time since then partially proud of the shot, and partially embarrassed that I took it.

But the rack looks good on the wall.:)

My longest shot (also my only shot), was about 120 yrd with my savage 10 MLII at a fork-horn that was walking, quartering towards me. Hit him right where I was aiming, grazed the heart and liver, and took out at least one lung, (forgot to check the other).
I fed him a 300gr. hornady sst pushed out by 42gr of sr4279. For optics, I was peeking through a leupold vxI 3x9.
BTW, he ran about 100yds straight towards me and dropped about 25yrds in front of my stand.

I normally hunt in thick stuff. Longest show is about 100 yards. Position was some sort of awkward "field prone", half sitting, half lying on my side with a ~2' rock ledge in front of me for support. Savage 99 in .358 with 225 grain partition. Bullet went a little lower than anticipated on a quartering-on shot. Not sure if I shot low or didn't manage to thread the needle through the bush like I though I had; anyhow, result was heart shot. The deer ran about 50 yards with not a drop of blood trail and was surprisingly hard to find!

New years day 2011. 3 year old bull moose. Tikka M695 in .300 Win Mag. Grey box Winchester 180 gr power points. Hit him twice thru the lungs before he fell over. Father in law drove it out on the ATV at 500 yards. So realistically about 400 yards. Longest shot I ever made. Tastiest moose too!

Yote on the trote at 350yards. shot through the mid section, dropped but then set off again with its front legs. Second shot went through the front shoulders... dead. with .300 win mag. No big game attempts at long range.

Mule deer, lasered at 602 yards, Remington 700 CDL, 270 Winchester using a 140 Accubond at just over 3000 fps. One shot through both lungs....30 feet and dead! Calculated correction - 9moa. Eagleye.

4 wild boars bust out running out from creek bottom into an open field. Held high and ahead of lead pig, missed, 2nd shot adjusted and drew bead on lead pig again... squeezed off and tipped the third one back, head over heels. I drove from where I shot; to the dead pig and odometer rolled over 700 meters. I would like to say I could shoot like that all day at running targets; but I have to chalk that one up to mainly luck.
