Bayonet On or Off with M44 carbine?

Speculation aside, has anyone test fired for comparative shot groupings with and without the bayonet attached to the rifle?

The bayonet is about half a pound of front end weight and not much use for hunting. Looking for cause and effect reasons of taking it off?

It will move the group

But not necessarily change it's size. If you want to know for sure take a tool to the range and make sure what YOUR rifle does you could get a surprise. Me personally I have no use for a bayonet since I left the army. If the loss of possible collector value is not an issue then take it off and remove the hardware that attaches it. I did it to my sks and It handles much better.

Shoots fine with it off (oddly about the same as my M38 ;)). Yes I've done it, no it didn't make enough of a difference to leave it that way. A friend of a friend had a '53 Polish that had had the bayo removed & the attachment lug turned down smooth & re-blued. He used it as a truck gun for a few years I guess, dropped a few deer.

I did some test shooting last fall when I was cooking up a good reload for moose, and found my polish M44 shoots alot more accurate with the bayonet on and extended. My ammo is all reloads, 180 grain bullet, IMR 4064 powder. This is based on 50 yard shots, aiming at bull, shooting off a bench rest, approx 80 rounds.
-With the bayonet closed, my shots dropped about 4 inches, but was center of the target.
-With the bayonet off completely, I shot left about 8-12 inches, but height was good.
With bayonet on and extended I can shoot close to bullseye's all day.:)
I also find the balance alot better when shooting from a stance.

Not a M44

Never seen any tests of the M44 with the bayonet extended. SGN or the Surplus Rifles publications ran an article about military rifle accuracy with and without the bayos attached. The 91/30s had some vertical stringing with the bayo on it. The only military rifle tested that showed no discernable difference in accuracy was the No1. MkIII. Curious as the MN 91/30 was designed to have the bayonet always mounted in combat. I don't shoot with any of my bayos mounted.

Only way to know for sure whats best for you and your rifle is to try both ways :D Everything else you will read doesnt really apply as they are other rifles with other shooters and different ammo.

Mine definitely prefers to have the bayo out; it shoots to the left of POA otherwise.

Just a question, but don't some folks kinda freak out when "some guy" at the range fixes a bayonet/extends it?
It wouldn't freak me out personally, but I don't know that I would do it if there were others around......know what I mean?

I dunno. I have received glares when I have done it, especially to one of my Mosins. Come to think of it, I was once told bayonets were illegal

ON or OFF, not folded or extended.

I've never heard boo about bayonets but whenever the SKS comes out I get an earful about steel cases. Usually have to spend a few minutes dragging the old magnet around cleaning up other peoples' messes before I can shoot to sooth the old boy's nerves ;)

Got some interesting answers, even one or two answered the question who have tried it. I know my rifle may or may not shoot he same as other rifles of the same, I know its about harmonics ( Duh!, don't forget velocity and scatter nodes. ). And the one about the SKS I think is posted on the wrong forum cuz its got nothing to do with anything here.

Recent findings with my 91/30 bayo on vs bayo off, I found the groups to be the same, only the POI had changed to about 8 inches higher at 75 yards with the bayo completely removed. Home loads were the only scenario where I can improve the groupings by anything to speak of. Very little effect on group size ( but still raised POI) on czeck surplus and the more recent Russian surplus, but the Russian Surplus has so far shown to be more accurate and hotter ammo than Czeck surplus.

If its nice this weekend ( not -30 c), I'll get out and try it myself. Just trying to get a heads up of what to expect at the range, from others who have made this comparisons. I'll bring large cardboard backing for the targets to be sure I know where I'm hitting. I don't have a problem to tune in some more home loads, and probably will. I'm just thinking that if it doesn't make much of a difference, I'd just assume take it off for hunting season. As said, just looking for cause and affect from others who have actually gone through the motions.

Someone mentioned that they get funny looks at the range when shooting with extended bayonets. Who cares what they think? If they know anything about firearms, they will know what you are doing and why. Funny comments and questions just make the ignorance light bulb flash red. Personally, I like the bayonets on. Some rifles were meant to be shot with bayo affixed.

Might help/answer ^^

15 Q. Why does my M44 (of M91/30) shoot so far to the left (or right) of the point of aim?
A. M44s were sighted in with the bayonet extended. Shooting with the bayonet stowed affects the barrel harmonics and can change the point of impact by as much as 1 foot per 100 yards. Not all M44s are effected this much or even at all. Either shoot with the bayonet extended or drift the front sight to compensate for the difference. Similarly M91/30s were sighted with the bayonet fixed.

I just sold one and with bayo off she shot 2" to the right, bayo on and she was deadly, had one awful kick though.;);)

2 inches to the right at what distance? What ammo were you using? I haven't fired the M44 yet, I like a good solid kick. The 91/30 barely punches at all with 180gr and its only half a pound heavier than the M44. Hopefully this weekend I can test her out.

I read an article in Guns & Ammo not too long ago that the M44s were meant to be fired with the bayonet extended, the 91 and 91/30s as well. Probably explains why bayonet frogs weren't commonly issued to Russian/Soviet troops. My 91/30 doesn't seem to care one way or the other.

Fiddler, I was using 150gr Igman at 100yds, I could'nt believe the bayo made such a difference. A fellow shooter in the club is from Russia and he told me they tested them with bayo extended. I can't imagine using her with bayo out in our bush and bogs. I had a M38 for around 20yrs and she never had the kick this Polish M44 had, a real shoulder thumper. Cheers.:)
