scope recommendations for .22lr

hey i just got my first gun (savage arms mark 2 :D ) the only thing is i hate the iron sights on it... i would love to get a scope on it but i dont know what one to get... i would like somthing with adjustable magnification and turrrets that you can turn by hand and dont need a stupid tool to turn...

what do you guys have on your .22's? what do you think of it? any help would be much appreciated...

Any thing from Bushnell works for me. I have a Banner 4-12 x40 AO on one of mine and a 3200 5-15x40 on another. Both great scopes. I have a Leapers 6-24x40 on another and it seems like a good scope for the bucks.

The Simmons 3-9x40 is ideal for that rifle. I should know, I have one. It has a Paralax under 50 yards which is ideal for rimfire. It shoots sub moa at 100 yards. Very clear. Costs $50. You'll need to buy weaver rings and bases. I removed the iron sights for lower scope mounting. This is exactly the same rifle you have:

I've tried all kindsof scopes on 22's: fixed power, 4x, 6x, 3-9, 4-12, 6-24. First choice on an accurate one is a bushnell 4-12 AO banner. If you want more quality, they make 4-12 AO scopes in their other lines too.
 
i think it might depend on how far you wanna shoot, and how small of a target you wanna see comfortably. the 3-9 stuff is common, and 4-12 isn't far behind. personally, i prefer to be REALLY zoomed in to my targets, so i gravitate towards the 8-32 and 10-40 stuff. at that power, you either gotta pay up or accept certain optical quality limits. i haven't used a lot of scopes, but usually on the affordable ones they're only really useful to half max zoom or maybe 75% max zoom, so a 3-9 is nice from 3-6, and gets kinda meh in 7-9. i'd expect the same for an 8-32, being good as an 8-20 or so, and then passable from 20-32.

so, how far do you wanna see, and how much of the target do you want unubstructed by the crosshairs? and then - how good are your eyes? are you ok with a dim image or do you need (or want) a bright one?

indoors? or outdoors?
no haziness or diffraction at full power? no weird color-fringing? i'd love to see a pic of what your scope looks like (through the eyepiece) at full power, indoors and outdoors.
 
I used it indoors at Phoenix which has very low lighting and outdoors at Genesee in the summer. No problems with either. I don't know about any fringing at the very edges. If you're shooting at something you shouldn't be looking at the edges anyway. If you're looking to anal-ise it in that way, it may not pass. If you're looking to see the target crystal clear and get excellent hits and groups, you can do it for $50 in a Simmons.
 
I use a Bushnell Banner 6-18x50 AO on my Savage bolt gun. The scope is made in Korea and not of the quality of one made in Japan, but not bad. I have no trouble using it at full 18X magnification, even indoors with the poor lighting at the Phoenix range. I find it clear out to the edge of the scope.

Some tips. Avoid the centerfire fixed scopes unless they are low magnification. You will have parallax that will affect your accuracy at short ranges. Overall best to get a variable that has an adjustable objective (AO). Just make sure it will adjust down to 10 yards.

You are not going to find these in an inexpensive scope, but all that I miss is more power, 1/8 MOA reticle adjustment, and possibly a 1/8 MOA target dot reticle. If you are going to use it in the field, the target dot is probably not a good idea. I have a duplex and it works very well in the field, and OK on targets.
 
i'm all for getting things done at a low / fair price, so i'm kinda interested. i've got a Gamo 3-9x56 and it's nice and bright but gets a bit soft and furry past 7x or so. it's great at 3x to 6x, though. and ya, i'm only really looking at the central portion (70% of the width). ya, the edges can be off and it's not a big deal since the clear stuff should be across all the mil-dots and half-way into the thicker "crosshair" lines. color fringing and diffraction can show up right in the middle too, not just at the edges of the view.

hmm, i'll try to take pics of my own scope this weekend at the various powers, aim it at a tree to see how weird the branches get.
 
OP, one thing I will recommend if you are doing a bunch of range shooting at different distances is to get a scope with targets turrets for at least the elevation adjustment. They make it vastly easier to get repeatable adjustments for various ranges without losing where you are at.

i would like somthing that can zoom in quite far so i can see my targets up close as im most likely gonna be bench or prone shooting with a bi-pod alot of the time...

that leapers 6-24x40 sounds nice.... how much was that one and where did you get it?
 
Anything over 9x needs AO to stay parallax free centrefire or rimfire. Under 9x you should use a rimfire scope if most of your shooting is going to be under 100yds and a centrefire is OK if most of your shooting is going to be over 100yds and the scopes don't have an AO. it's kind of funny how we existed for years with only the bushnell 4x20 rimfire or the 2-7x22 bushnell variable - maybe wth a 4x20 tasco thrown in

im totaly lost in all these scopes you can buy... i thought i had a hard time deciding what gun to buy lol....

so what im looking for is a scope with:

5-25 magnification +or- a bit...
adjustable parallax
"tactical"? easy to use turrets (no tool needed to turn them...)

and i have found a few scopes that fit that but they are like 400 or more $$$ is there ANYTHING under 250 bucks or am i out to lunch?

you and i are in a similar "zoom range and dollar range" right now, and it seems Vortex Crossfire entry-level stuff fits the bill.
