Sure is a hate on for the stock 10/22 with some people. That being said, a while ago I bought one with the intent of seeing how well one would shoot with almost no aftermarket parts. I rechambered, recrowned, did the trigger to about 2.5 lbs, put a Rimfire Technologies crossbolt bedding kit in it, and a cheap Leupold clone scope. I tried to chamber it specifically for Xpert ammo, sometimes it works to chamber specific, sometimes it doesn't. I also did a molyfusion treatment on the barrel. A modified stock 10/22 can shoot amazingly well as the targets (at 50 yds) prove. The barrels are good quality, just in need of work.

Rechambered and recrowned and trigger job and you are still calling it "stock"?;) How did it do before the massage is what I would like to know. That said I love the cheek piece. I really like the RF bedding system, I use them on my guns also.

ya, from what i hear a Ruger 10/22 is a GREAT gun once you replace all of it with aftermarket parts. really not sure how a modified stock gun is still a great stock gun.

that target done unsupported? or on a bipod or sandbag? i'm guessing a pod or giant vise. dime size at 100 is sub-MOA, so your dime-size at 50 is probably 1.5MOA at most. which is pretty good i think for a "stock" 10/22 with a bunch of mods. :p

Here is what a STOCK... ie; no mods or upgrades, marlin model 60 at a paced out 30ish yds with open sights will do. 10 shots

Can ANY 10/22 do this out of the box without tinkering all to hell with it?

30 yds ain't that far, true, but that's with no scope and a gun that is truely stock. A target shot at 50m with a parallax adjustable scope should be more than equivalent to my grouping. But that 10/22 is just barely equivalent after a bunch of tinkering. That's the point. And it probably cost twice as much because of the name on it.

Honestly I don't care. I get it. A lot of people love the 10/22 for various reasons. But those who claim it is an accurate and reliable, cost comparatively affordable gun out of the box are kidding themselves and people who don't know better. If you want a reliable action to build upon and make your own great shooting gun the 10/22 can't be beat, but out of the box it's overpriced and less of a gun than many others in it's class that cost much less. Say what you want... A spade is a spade.

thing is, I for one enjoy the tinkering, enjoy waiting for some new part to arrive in the mail, it's like christmas morning every few weeks!
I like gettin my hands dirty and breaking my rifles down routinely for upgrades and so forth.
I also like that I can have several builds that are very different from one another, yet have interchangeable parts.
out of the box, blah blah, I know, we all know, it's why we do it ;)

And I hear that. For that it can't be beat and definitely has it's merits. I'm the same in a sense... I really enjoy fixing and tinkering, except for me its with guns that are kind of Old, cheap, and worn out and I usually end up flipping them for a profit. That's partially why I'm anti ruger... Im pretty frugal and don't see how you can get back get what you put into them. But to each their own.
 
When I first got my 10/22 I thought it was a lemon. Then I started experimenting with ammo.
The more expensive shot better for the most part but some expensive stuff grouped as bad as the cheapest.
The rifle is still stock and with it's food of preference it shoots as good as any.

I'm saying it's more the ammo than anything else. This "Savage is good and Ruger is crap" is ... crap.
