Which SKS scope and mount to use?

I tried searching and found information on different scopes and mounts for my new to me SKS (norinco) but did not find the answers I was looking for.

My question is this: I am looking for a cheaper scope and mount for my Norinco SKS but which one? Most of the mounts I have looked at on line look like the scope would be so high my cheek would be no where near the stock. I don't know anyone with a scope to look at and try so my research so far has been limited to the dealers web sights. I looked at the thread from BC Tactical with the new mount they built and it looks interesting but where is your cheek when you are looking through the sight. I have always been more comfortable shooting with my cheek firmly locked on the stock so can everyone please chime in with there thoughts on the subject.

1) which mount and why>
2) which scope and why (yes I want to keep it on the cheap side)?
3) what are your thoughts on accuracy with your cheek not locked onto the stock?

Thanks in advance for your insights.

NcStar because they are good enough for an sks and guarantied for life.
Whatever mount you want, i have the raised look through with three rails just like everyone else..lol... there really are only a few to pick from.
And ur cheek will only touch for the irons, scoped its more chin.

I use the NcStar tri mount, which is raised as you can see under it to check out your iron sites for very close targets. As for cheek or chin, depends if you have a long or short face. Sometimes it just floats there, but so long as you can rest the rifle on a steady object (rock or something) and hold it tight into your shoulder, it's up to breathing and concentration. So I have found, and proven with groups. Cheers!

P.S. My scope is also NcStar, a 3X9X42 compact tactical scope. Cost me about 60 bucks new. :)

Basically any scope mount design for the SkS platform is always higher than a check weld for the iron sight. Although any check riser is nice fix for this but then renders your iron sight un-useable.
On my SkS I got the side wall receiver mount and it is as low as possible, hence I can no longer use my iron sight's but I still don't get a perfect check weld. Now there was some one at poco a few weekends back with this B.C. Tactical that had a Bushnell red dot on it and it felt just like I was shooting irons all be it much quicker to acquire my shots.
Now allot of people are going to bash the NcStar mount and the only thing I have to say is to look for the 1 with the 4 set screws as it did quite a good job for me. Although those compact scopes kept going on me. It was almost timed to every green crate I used.
Hope this info helps ya on your next purchase.

Tazwillfix,
Check out the Sticky: sights and mounts
Page 3, post #25, SKS Weaver Converta-
mount by bjs 7292.
Use the Weaver kit #48881(includes #48302
base #48310 mount/brkt.)
Scope choices are somewhat limited if you plan
on using stripper clips, max. 8.5" long. Many are
using the compact Leapers, Nc Star, red dot etc.
The lace up cheek rest/pad will help out the cheek
weld.
Another good mount choice is the Choate, both
mounts are drill & tap.

I tried quite a few receiver cover version mounts and just couldn't get anything to hold zero consistently. Finally installed a Choate drill & tap mount & it is EXCELLENT!!! Solid as a rock! Do yourself a favour and just buy the Choate to begin with..... it'll be cheaper and much less frustrating in the long run!

My eyes are getting worse each year so I don't shoot irons much any more. When I installed the Choate I notched out the side of the Tapco stock to lower the mount. Makes for a very comfortable cheek weld but using the irons is still just barely possible. Biggest drawback is I now have to remove the mount to disassemble the rifle for cleaning but that's no biggy:D I have it set up so the rail is hovering just above the top of the receiver cover. I also installed it further back than the Choate instructions stated so it doesn't interfere with using stripper clips.

Not that it matters but Choate is made in the USA. Probably won't be long until NC Star clone it!

The new BC Tactical mount seems great.

It replaces the rear sight, and holds zero, as opposed to receiver cover ones. And it doesn't require drilling.

It all depends on what you want. In my opinion there are only four mounts out there that are any good. Two of them are no Gunsmith mounts and two are gunsmith mounts or if you have the ability to do it yourself.

Non Gunsmith mounts are Scoutscopes mount and B.C. tactical mount.

Gunsmith mounts are Choates mount and Weaver converta mount or similar.

I can't believe in my search for answers I would miss the sticky with all that information. Thanks for the input now I have more reading to do! Is there anyone in the Kelowna area with any of these sights mounted that would like to go out to the range and show me? I have an entire crate of ammo just waiting for it to warm up enough to go play:D

Thanks for the info given so far.

If you intend to keep it scoped at all times.

Choate side mount.

If not, just keep the iron sights :)

There's also the option of the scout mounts, but seriously unless you intend to use long eye relief I just dont get the point of a red dot style scout mount. Unless you do REALLY terrible with iron sights.

BC Tactical mount is way to expensive...

You mean $75 for a reliable canadian-made no-gunsmithing SKS mount is way too much? Really? What are your other and better options?

Pussy! Did you know that snow can stay on the ground for months at a time in some places?:p:D

I grew up in Calgary and used to go winter camping in tents and snow caves but I moved here for a reason and I have been here long enough to become a woos and I need a clear road to the range and at least warm enough to not wear gloves for at least an hour:p

Mr. Spectacular & SardauKar, Im Glad to see you like them...

To me it looks like junk, When I wanted a Rail I put on a Choate....

I would never put that abortion on my SKS... Cant even use you Irons as backup, Cant CO-Witness... All around FAIL if you ask me...

But thats me... If you like them thats great also, I dont lets move on...

OH TEH NOEZ!!!

You mean I co-witness a 21st centruy red dot on a 60 year old surplus gun? SHOCKING.

So what should they cost, in your humble opinion? $10? I mean they probably only have 100 hours of man time just into the development of it. $10 should be more then adequate, considering they might sell 500 of the things...

:HR:

Well seeing as how the SKS has an amazing accuracy of 50 yards with surpless rounds and the commercial rounds are bloody pricey i didnt find an amazing scope/ mount was nessesary but...

i got the NCstar Tri mount (fabsports) and mounted it with a Vortex red/green dot x2 scope...i found it a very good combo and with my small face i have no problem getting my eye to the scope properly (i do have a 6 position stock though)

also to bring the scope down a little more i opted for a lower "millett" scope mount

with the bipod and sitting firm on the bench i was hitting 2.5-3" groups at 100yrds useing Hornady loads...for my SKS i considered that a victory haha
