Old ammo disposal ?

I have searched the threads but not have found a solution for my situation.

I removed all the shot from some very very old shotgun shells. I need the lead for another project around the bench.
Now I have a box of primed SG shells and powder with no shot in them and I cut the top of the shell (Paper) to remove the shot. How do I legally dispose of these items. Or go dig a hole and bury them in the back 40.
 
so all you've got left is the primer, if i understand that correctly- a week long soak in oil should deaden the priming compound , then they're just "shells-" same as you would other garbage- i don't know about popping them, b/c you'd probably have to clean afterwards, and they're probably corrosive primed-the powder can be just sprinkled on the lawn
 
dump the old powder on the lawn and garden, it will be fertilizer in no time at all. As said above, soak the old primers in used oil for a short time and drop them in the trash.

Do not do this!
if there is suffceint numbers and depending on where you live this could be contrary to local by laws.( Haz Mat Rules may apply)
Call your local police dept. on the non emergency number and inform them of what you have,
No need to explain what you did with powder and shot.
They will or should set up a time for you to drop them off.
Again, this depends on if there are five shells or 500 and how one might discard the inert useless ( condition now ) ammo.
Of course others will have a different opine, but you did ask.

Have nothing to do with the police. No offence intended to a previous poster, but that is stupid.
The powder can easily and properly disposed of by:

1. Burning. put it in a little pile in the back yard and simply burn it.
2. The lawn fertilizer idea is correct. It will degrade quickly and the nitrogen compounds will nourish the grass. Just like commercial fertilizer.

Also, the best way to get rid of the primers is to pop the primed shells in a shotgun. Put a rag over the muzzle and there is almost no noise made. I know because I've done this myself.

Umm FFS we are talking primers here dude.You know the mercury and other nasty stuff that makes the gun powder go boom!

So you done pissing on my shoes or shall I piss on yours too?

I would burn the powder, flush it down the toilet, or throw it on the ground outside. I would throw the hulls in the garbage oil soaked or not. I am always in favour of saving components and reusing them when possible.
 
Most ranges have a container to dispose of live or fail to fire ammo. Take it there, and let them worry about it.
 
Put some gasoline into a bucked or can, dump in the shell bases and let them sit for a couple of days. Slosh them around a bit and the gasoline will desolve the varnish over the primer. This will allow the gasoline into the primer and ruin it.
You could also just punch out the primers and reuse them, if they fit your existing cases. I picked up a bunch of primed cases that were cut to save the wads, powder and lead. I only did it to see if the primers would work. They did just fine, not one misfire. They weren't expanded by firing so they pressed out easily.

Mercury has NOT been used in our primers for about 7 decades now, so a non-issue on that score, I'm sure. I certainly would not be getting the "gendarmes" involved in this. There are so many safe ways to dispose of these...several in previous posts. Eagleye.
 
Burn the powder and fire the hulls and then pitch them. Problem solved.

Most of the heavy metals and truely hazardous material in ammunition has been taken care of by the enviromentalist and the fact the US military wanted the Hazardous materials taken out as much as possible.
 
Oh FFS. Snap the damn caps next time you are at the range and dump them in the barrel.

Like the Police and anyone else need their time wasted like this. Mountains outta molehills.

Should have shot them anyway.

Throw it all in the fire. Seriously. The primers will go pop, the powder will burn. No big deal.
