Prohibited:
"The firearm of the design commonly known as the FN-FAL (FN-LAR) rifle, and any variant or modified version of it, including the FN 308 Model 44, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Competition Auto, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Heavy Barrel 308 Match, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Paratrooper 308 Match 50-64 and FN 308 Model 50-63."

the answer is right there in the description- and that covers just about any idea that's even REMOTELY related to it- the fal/fn /whatever is also "special" in the fact that it's been at least RESTRICTED since 75, when turdeau had a mad-on for it, and PROHIBITED since the 90's - in other words, if c-68 was repealed and a more sensical firearms act was to take it's place, the fn would still be one of the last to be generally available again

Only hope I can see, is getting it classified as a Historical Item.

Were better off hoping that the Conservatives scrap the entire Firearms program and rebuild it from the ground up.

This i dont understand , we have firearms that resemble prohibited firearms yet were still able to purchase them .

If a manufacturer builds a FN clone in a semi automatic only receiver that cannot accept any full automatic parts then technically it couldnt be classified as a variant .

We have legal CZ skorpions (clones) which are prohibited by name . m14 (clones) which are legal yet real m14's are prohibited by name and share certain parts commonality with real m14s , TP9 (clone) of the steyr TMP which is a named prohib , the pe90 which is a clone / look alike of the sig 550 rifle which is a named prohib .

So honestly someone please inform me of why the hell a clone of the FN or eve a g3 series rifle would matter if were allowed to own all the above clones without issue . And i would hazard a guess that no ones even tired .

*First section of an email directly from the firearms department of the RCMP

1. The rifle known as the FN FAL was "restricted" by the Government of Canada in the 1970's, then its status changed temporarily to "non restricted" in 1977 and later became "restricted" again circa 1979. The FN FAL remained "restricted" until 1992 when it (and the US Rifle M 14) became "prohibited".

2. The FN FAL was a target for special treatment and ever more restrictive legal classification by successive Governments of Canada, Orders by the Governor-In-Council (Cabinet) and were passed in a democratic fashion by majority vote in the House of Commons (Parliament).

No member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has the discretionary power to influence the firearms laws formulated and passed into existence by the Government of Canada, nor does any Public Servant employed by the Canadian Firearms Program.

You have a democratic right to petition your Honourable Member of Parliament on this matter and request that he / she approach the applicable Minister of the Crown on your behalf to make your opinions known. .

*second , which i think is important part*

This is how a gentleman described how the RCMP determines VARIANT

The present interpretation is found in many different tests.

1) How does the manufacturer portray the firearm? Do they state, for instance, this is their modified version of the XYZ model in sales and technical marketing information brochures. Is it portrayed as a low cost alternate training rifle for users of the XYZ rifle, and so on.
2) Is there a common receiver or how much parts commonality is there between the two firearms, and so on. If a 22 LR, blow-back operated variant, are the changes any greater than those required to support a 22 LR rim-fire calibre variant of a centre fire gas operated firearm?
3) Is the firearm made to look exactly like the firearm being imitated? (size, weight etc.)
4) Would firearm XYZ exist today if the firearm it imitates did not exist?

None of these factors in itself is conclusive but all in concert guide the decision making process. Appearance and "how does the manufacturer portrays the firearm" are the most important criteria.

If norico can make and sell there "M305" here without and issue as the M14 is prohib by name, I can not see why norico couldn't do the same thing with the FAL. Wouldn't be an orignal, but hey, something is better then nothing.

Fixed it.

LOL. I am a math teacher and we use graph paper a lot. My kids were forever asking why we couldn't use "regular" paper. Finally I redefined the word "regular". Graph paper is now "regular" and lined is "lined". The arguments have completely stopped.

This i dont understand ...

We have legal CZ skorpions (clones) which are prohibited by name . m14 (clones) which are legal yet real m14's are prohibited by name

Perhaps your life would be a little less stressful if you took the time to actually educate yourself instead of making up "facts" then agonizing that they don't make sense.

The skorpion is not prohibited by name. As fnrob has already pointed out, the M14 is not prohibited by name, either. If they were, we could not have skorpion clones or Norinco M305s.

As for the SIG PE90, I'm sure that permitting it was the subject of much debate down at RCMP headquarters. It probably came down to the fact that there were arguments for declaring it a variant of both the SIG 540 and 550, as it has elements of both. Surely, if you can't decide which gun it is a variant of, it has substantial differences from both. This is hardly comparable to making an FAL or a G3 (which are prohibited by name) that is semi-auto, but otherwise identical to the real thing.

The skorpion is not prohibited by name.

Surprisingly, it is.
Former Prohibited Weapons Order No. 11

The firearm of the design commonly known as the Skorpion Auto Pistol, and any variant or modified version of it.

I'm not 100% sure why, but I have heard from a couple of different sources that since these semi auto versions don't have the rate of fire reducing mechanism in the pistol grip that the original FA versions have, they were considered different enough to be considered non variants. Of course, this may just have been speculation, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.

I'm not holding my breath but I really want one of these. Here's hoping that in the future some common sense Government scraps some of these idiotic laws. Mind you if they ever were taken off the prohib list the prices would jump beyond reasonable for quite a while I bet!

Kc.338Lp,

How long have you been at this game? It should be obvious to anybody that gun laws don't make any sense what so ever!

If you're interesting in a challenge, try to get you MP to obtain a copy of the documentation used to make the FN a prohibited firearm...

You know, when a car becomes "illegal" to drive on the road, the government will give you a long and thourough report explaining how they came about this decision and why they deem this vehicule a danger...

With guns, you'll be lucky to get a photocopy of the "para military" section of Gun Digest... with the "evil" guns circled.

Keep the faith. I want an L1A1 (Or C1A1 or Aussie L1A1) and standard capacity mags for all my "hardware" just as bad as you guys do.

One day....

Fnc1

Dunno what you guy's are waxing so nostalgic about. FN had lot's of good features but couldn't mount a scope well. I liked the adjustable gas system. Stock ergonomics were poor. Loved the left side cocking. Sights were good.

M14s are just as much fun to shoot . I have fired both at 500 m and prefer the M14. Besides, for the time being , this is all we have.
