I live out in the county, I am also new to this forum, and I apologize in advance if this has been posted before (Which I'm sure it has)..

We have always had a problem with people dumping cats, and dogs out here.. I live about 10 minutes from a city, my nearest neighbour is maybe a quarter of a kilometer, so it's expected city folks will drop their pets off here, instead of the humaine society not too far from where we are...

I have a Remington 870 12 gauge, but really, that's just too damn messy..
I also have a 1917 NR David 16 gauge double barrel, but that's just clumsy, and again, one hell of a mess..

So, I thought, why not just scare the little bugger away, coyotes will get him in the next month anyway, so I went and grabbed my Red Ryder, and now I'm just waiting for him to come back in the garage, where he's been spraying..

Am I breaking any laws? I've went to a few neighbours and asked them if it was theirs, but they all mention the same problems with him spraying around their houses..

kill em...the red ryder if lucky will just wound em..and that would be un-humane...just kill em dead...i had the same problem, its too bad you couldn`t catch the idiots dumping thier animals off on your door step.

Have you tried bringing in coyotes with bait...? Don't poison it, just "bait & shoot"...

Some meat would attract the yotes, and quickly remedy your cat problem. Plus it'll give you more targets..!

* have you thought about a dedicated "varmit gun"...? .22mag or .17HMR is good enough for anything less than 75lbs @ <100m...

:)

I'm not a great shot, I can hit skeets with my 12 gauge, but something moving as fast as this thing does, I'd hate to shoot through the barn..

And yes, I've been considering a Henry .22 Lever action

We poured some old chicken soup out there on Saturday, usually that is quick at bringing them in.. I think they call them 'Red Wolves' here, mix between a coyote and a wolf.

Have you tried closing your garage door?
After 9PM yes, but it's our primary way in and out of the house, the walkway entrance is that stamped concrete with that awful slippery coating, all we need is a lawsuit from someone tripping.

So call the MNR for your area they should be able to tell you if it's legal in your area to shoot them. Check with the RM as well. Also let the local police know what your doing if any of them have an issue with it back away from the idea. Better to ask permission then beg forgiveness

If you already shoot on the property don't worry about it and just deal with the animal.

It's a little hard to tell you where go here since you don't have a location listed each province/RM/city/town/village is different. In the places I've lived I have gone from legal to shoot if I walked 50M from my house, to at least a 40 minute drive on the highway to shoot, to walking down to the end of the street I lived on to be legal well sort of it was a little close to the school for my liking. The school was actually out of town limits and the RM had no restrictions on discharge once you exited the town.

Also do you rent or own cause that has an affect as well depending on the province or at least someone has told me as such. I know one guy that claimed if you rented you couldn't shoot on the property he was an owner and I know a renter that said you could.

I agree a .22Lr would be a good purchase and it gives you another gun :D

Sorry, I usually put that on my profile..
Essex County Ontario, I have shot skeet in the back yard, over 1000 shells on a Sunday not 250' from the road.

Then giver man don't worry about it's a nuisance animal as long as it's not a a game animal my understanding is it's open if it's wrecking your property and no ones going to call on you it would appear. I would double check with your MNR guys first just to make sure the Ontario regs are a piece of #### designed to get you charged.

It is illegal under the Criminal Code to kill an animal that is "kept for a lawful purpose", but of course that does not apply to feral cats as they are not 'kept'.

If a feral cat is harmed through dog or other attacks then the general Criminal Code cruelty provision against causing "unnecessary pain, suffering or injury" would likely be engaged. However it would be much harder, though not impossible, to make out a cruelty charge without physical injury. 'Suffering' is more akin to mental injury, and this is little recognized in animal law yet.
That just sums it up right there.

If you shoot the cat and it belongs to someone else and they get wind of it you could be charged with destruction of property.

Just make sure you hit it through both shoulders as they tend to run if you don't.

At one time I also had a problem with people dumping their cats near our country home. I just "eliminated" them. We knew all the neighbors and their pets, so it was not a problem. I mostly used a 22 WRM, and it got the job done handsomely, without suffering. A couple that were much more cautious ended up dead by 222 Remington or 220 Swift. Regards, Eagleye.

A .22 with CCI Stingers works pretty good. I had to get rid of 10 or so last year.

I first tried with my .308. Turns out it's a little too much for cats. Supreme accuracy (as with any animal, I didn't want any of them to suffer) I just couldn't take the mess after the second one. I then moved to the .22 in my Savage MK II. The Stingers worked great. Not messy at all. Every shot was within 50 meters. Most were closer.

That being said, if you're gonna spend $350 on a .22 maybe the Remington 597 VTR would be better (semi-auto, 30rd mag avail.).

But I was thinking more along the lines of a simple Ruger 10/22 or Rem 597... $250'ish - done deal... Then you have another toy to play with & "pimp out"..!

As a trapper, I had plenty of problems with feral cats.
My trapline was between three cities and a lot of nice people with good intention;) would drop them off in the country, thinking some nice farmer will take it in, and feed it... WRONG.. they will only be run over by cars and caught in traps.

Who is the cruel one?, The guy who lets it go in the country, or the trapper, truck driver, coyote or owl, or starvation... that eventually kills it.

After they make a mess of youre perfectly laid out coyote or fox set, they did get shot.:D
Cause its a lot of work trapping, and they really peed me off.

Best thing Premier Ralph said...

was Shoot, shovel & shut up. This applies well to Feral cats (which is common rural problem), especially male cats which tend to roam and spray everything, the males are not even good hunters.

I once heard a joke about a farmer who live traps them and releases them in the city. :D Who knows how much truth there is.... City people are goofy, eh?

the mink ranchers shoot every cat they see in our area as they steal feed off the pen tops .they get wise fast and can be a difficult target .22s are used and nothing else .
