Having a hunting lic. From any state meets the requirement for a form6 approval.
I've been using an Alaska lic. For years...

That said, it's a good idea to have something in writing to verify your stated purpose for a particular trip with your guns... A match invite, flyer or even an email confrimation from a match you're signed up for.
All these have been accepted by Homeland Security when I've shown 'em.

...if you are a member of the WNYPPL. Otherwise you are lying to the BATFE.

It's not really a case of lying to the BATFE.

All they require is that you meet the criteria to fall into on of the "exceptions" with regard to the phohibition on the importation/possession of firearms by non immigrant aliens.
I once spoke to one of the BATFE's "Examiners of Legal Documents"... or something like that... She told me that as long as an app meets the "letter of the law" it will be approved.
I use a Hunting Lic. from the state of Alasksa... 'Never been to Alaska.

Now like I said before... Having a flyer/invite/screen capture giving a few details about an event you're attending in your hand when you actually cross the border can help, but it's just to support your "stated reason" for your visit...
'Same could be said of driving to Chicago for a wedding.
'Buddy did that last year and when the BPO asked why he was going to Chicago and he said.."To attend a wedding" the BPO asked... "Do you have an invitation I can see?"

Nope. You don't have to be a member of WNYPPL to shot their matches. Thought is is a bit cheaper for members to shoot there.

I didn't say you had to be a member to shoot their matches. The letter states that you are a member of WNYPPL,

This Letter is to inform you that: Your Name
Your Street
Your City, Ontario
Your Postal Code

Is a member of the Western New York Practical Pistol League.
All members are invited to participate in our scheduled monthly pistol matches and weekly practices.
The letter is for members of WNYPPL to download/print/submit to BATFE as supporting documentation for their (the members) form 6NIA application.

Yes, it really is lying. Buying a hunting license to support your 6NIA is not an admission of going hunting - it's just a document that allows you to hunt. Presenting a letter that states you are a member of a club or league, when in fact you are not, is lying.

I shoot regularly at WNYPPL, Rochester, and a few other locations in NY & PA. Every year I submit my form 6NIA with a hunting license because I hunt in the USA, and I'm too lazy to gather up all my match invites & letters to fax in. The stipulation is that the hunting license only needs to be current - not expired. BUT - Any match invitation must have been submitted with your original form 6NIA application. A match invitation you received in June is not valid as supporting documentation for a form 6NIA that you received prior to that date.

This is in Paragraph 25 of the form 6NIA application.

A little bit of a hijack..........

Well whatever...
Batfe just wants you to have the doculnents to support your exception.
They don't care thar I don't actually go to Alaska.
The PBO might so that's why I show them an invite, match flyer etc. If they ask.
Hasn't ever been an issue traveling this way... Been doing it like this for years now... If that makes me a liar... So be it.

When they first started enforcing the f6nia rules and I applied I called 'em up for dome reason and heir legal examiner actually told me to apply with a hunting lic. So that they could approve a permit good for a year... I mentioned that well, I don't hunt and was told it didn't matter... It meets the legal requirement.
