Who is using a Versa Max?
I iknow there was a recall on them when they first came out, but from what I have been told they are a super soft recoiling shotgun, and my buddies have been buggin me to buy one!
Not that I want a semi, but they keep telling me I can shoot 12 guage smokeless again using this gun becuase it is as soft as my 20's.
Just how good are these guns, and are the in fact any better than the Berreta, benelli, Maxus, etc?

there is a really good thread at shotgun world on the Remington subforum.

reviews have been for the most part very good.

I read that , yes, I was hoping that I could hear from others as well., especially about the recoil issue.

if this gun recoils as soft as I am lead to beleive, it could be just the ticket for a waterfowl gun....

Being a Remington fan I am really thinking hard about purchasing the VersaMax but to tell you the truth some of Greens latest offerings have me a just little trigger shy.

It would be nice to ditch one of my spaghetti guns for a VM, but you have to say the Italian pieces are well made.

Cat I have been a remington man for 35 years and still have a lot of their guns but not too many that have been made in the last 10-15 years.
The dam beretta, browning and winchesters semi work so well it is a big risk for me to buy a versa max.I have not seen any here so far being shot.

I have 10 Wingmasters ( with some express's thrown in) and an old 1100 , a few M10's and some other various models , but I do not shoot them as a rule, only loan them out to people tat use them at a shoot r two that our club puts on.
However, the 1100 have had a zillion orunds through it, iut was my father's trap gun.
I'm not about to "drink the Kool-Aid" for a 12 bore however, unless I am CERTAIN that a shptgun of any particuoar brand is going to help me, and until recently have not seen a semi 12 that shoots as light as I can handle.
I'm going to have to find a versa -max to try and se for myself, I do like the Italian gas guns to a point....

Only 10 wingmasters, poor guy you better buy some more:)
What are you planning on shooting with this 12ga?? My golds or x2's cycle everything.??

This would be a dedicated waterfowl gun, geese and ducks.
Cycling isn't near as important as recoil for me....

Unfortunately Cat. I cannot help you with a recoil question. I hunt waterfowl with a 10ga gold and sp-10's and don't notice the recoil.
Same with my 3 1/2 12 ga golds and x2's and x3 I just don't notice it.
I will flinch shooting the bps 10 or my tikka t3 lite in 300m and notice recoil but that is about it. Hopefully someone can assist you.
I have heard guys say those new beretta A391 Xtrema2 Kick-Off® MAX4 have no recoil but I have not shot one.

With any new Remington product it's better if someone else buys it instead of you. That way if it reveals itself to be a poorly-made, useless POS you won't be stuck trying to get rid of it. This is what I did with the Remington CTi105 and was very glad I did.

Although my moniker might not suggest so, I'm not "stuck" on any particular brand and do have a number of other marques in the cabinet, including a Remington 870 and a few of their rifles. The last Remington auto-loaders I parted with were an 11-87, a couple of 1100's and a much shot S58 Skeet before that.

Almost every auto-loader out there is the softest-shooting. Just read their ads ! Even Beretta & Benelli go at each other from that perspective, despite both being owned by Beretta !

For a dedicated "waterfowler", I'd first consider if I was ever going to shoot 3-1/2's ... and if recoil is an issue, it shouldn't be much of a length decision process. That may narrow some of the make and model choices for you.

Having said that, a camo 391 with the KO option was certainly one of the "softest" recoiling shotguns I've ever used with hefty field loads. There are two ultra-reliable 391 Parallel Targets in the rack at present - and I wouln't hesitate to add a third as a dedicated fowler ...

I wouldn't buy one just yet. Considering the lack of QC at Remington lately and the fact that ALL of Versa Max's were recalled right off the bat then a new batch released. I'd personally wait a few years and let them and other sorry souls work out all of the bugs. In the mean time buy a SBE II!

Stay Clear of Remingtons new Semis, I talked with a fellow who guided some folks from Remington on a duck hunt, They started with three functioning Semis and ended with none.

If I know who you are talking about I think they were using new out-of-the-box 11-87's not the Versa-Max

Could be, from the fellow I was talking to they were shooting the CTI. But you know how stories change.

Moral of the Story: Remington has been making 11-87's for many years and all of a sudden they have a very High failure rate, what chance does a completely from scratch Remington Semi have.

The softest shooting 12 gauge I have ever fired was a Benelli Cordoba.

I have had a chance to handle the Versa Max several times at shows and stores. I am impressed with how it comes to my shoulder, and it is not too bulky either which is important to me as I am not a big guy. The Remington reps claim it cycles well with low recoil and will handle any load interchangeably with no adjustments needed. I will qualify these statements though and say I have not actually shot it yet either. And then I look at their most recent pump shotgun, the 887 and just shudder! How any major player in the shotgun industry could market such a pile of dog dung is beyond me.

I think the wait and see principle should be used on this one!

i was the crash test dummy for the remington 887 tactical .. but its a great shotgun . none of the imaginary problems invented by the 870 fanboys have shown up with it..

so i would probably be willing to take a crack at the versa max .. if it wasnt so sinfully ugly ..

Maybe the tactical version is different but the 887 I owned briefly (won it in a draw) was very poorly made, handled like a stump and was butt ugly.
