Feral Cats...

I know an old trapper that hs a pile of tanned feral cat hides. Found them in his snares, so he kept em. When i first saw them, i didn't realize wht thy were until i worked through the pile and found an orange tabby :)

:D

I was just thinking what size of board to use for drying, and if its a fur in or fur out species :D

I guess you would treat them the same wasy as you do a skunk, about the same size really. :D

Mittens anyone  :D

Wow. Reading this makes me think I've arrived at douchebag central.

Yup. Killing something to eat or use can be something to take pride in but too many in this thread appear to be taking pleasure killing an animal that really had no choice but to be there. Kill it humanely but try not to ejaculate all over the place when you're done, ok?

some trappers do pest control or nuisance amimal removal / control.

got to do something with the animals you are removing, and the SPCA or pound is not interested in feral cats, or will charge you for dropping them off.

When trapping I prefer to use traps that kill the animal rather then just hold it, unless there is a risk of catching someones pets.

So what to do with the dead cats..... ?

coyote bait,

Sure, why not? It's not like I haven't live-trapped cats before. The difference between you and me is that if I have to kill them I take them to a vet or a shelter. If I lived in a more rural location I might even have to shoot them. But I wouldn't post about it like it's some kind of joke. Killing is necessary but it's not something to enjoy and not something to jest about in an open forum. God help us all when these types of threads represent the gun enthusiasts of Canada. "What gun is best fer killin' cats". Nice.

I would think a coon board would do it!. Fur side out though... so one could still pet the fur:) Its about all they're good for...:D

No one should take pleasure in killing a cat. But sometimes it has to be done. And when it has to be done it should be done the quickest and most humanely. I don't think there are many people here that are taking extreme pleasure killing cats.

I should also mention there was a pelt price on barn cats back at the turn of the century and in the 30's. It's value was about 25 cents.... enough to buy more 22 shells to kill some more..

Funny how values of animals dont change:D, just opinions of the value has changed dramaticaly.

No it's a logical solution to a problem if you don't shoot them then they will starve to death after they have eaten everything alive in the area they can kill. If it was a natural situation then it would balance it's self but people keep dropping more cats into it so blame the idiots dropping the animal off rather then dealing with their problem and making it the other guys issue. All he is doing is decreasing the amount of time the animal will suffer.

As far as I'm concerned he's doing the cats a favor at least it's quick and don't even get me into the declawed cats dumped at farms.

Rattus,... killing cats is not a joke, it is a harsh reality, and should be posted on an open forum to let pet owners become more responsible, just as most dog owners have become. everyone learns the hard way,.. its too bad that unwanted pets pay the price.

Yes sadly some pet owners let their dogs loose in the country that find the same fate.:( You wont find many farmers protecting livestock here that havent shot at a dog or cat.

Canadian gun ownership and firearm enthusiasm has little to do with the reality of farmers protecting their property, and trappers taking the unexpected.

Feral cats are not house pets, they are wild animals. Most, if not all of them, were never domesticated, and have been born in the wild. These are not the cute little kitties that you see up for adoption at the humane society. They will fight if cornered, and present a very serious health risk to actual pets and children who think they are "cute little kitties". They carry diseases, and will attack other pets or children leaving you with the vet/hospital trip.

I live in Essex County in a semi-rural setting. The ,17mach2 was invented as the perfect feral cat vaccine. We are pet lovers but a feral cat has no business here. They are hell on songbirds and everyother small animal. I take no pleasure in killing feral cats but it has to be done. Especially around the house. We have 2 barn cats that are fixed and get their vet visits. All I need is a feral to harass them OR scratch my 3 year old son. No upside to letting them get too comfortable around the yard as far as I'm concerned.

Vet bill = $80

.22 LR = 8 cents.

I'd bet no-one enjoys shooting a cat, or a dog, or a horse with a broken leg, or a prize cow that prolapsed, the list goes on. It's simply a fact of life and something that has to be done.

Gophers, on the other hand........

Its a thread about what gun is best for killing cats.....why? So they dont suffer. Its a perfectly logical question by someone who was not sure. Thats what these forums are for. If you dont like the topic.....quit reading it and go back to hugging your tree :)
