What kind of accuracy are you getting with bulk 55gr .223 ammo.

Just wondering how mine compares.

I'm talking under ideal circumstances, off a bench, with a scope, no wind, etc.

2-3" if I take my time. Optic is an Eotech.

That said... I usually don't take my time. :ar15:

Even when I am "Taking my time"... it is still about a shot every 5 seconds, so I may not be the best benchmark for this test.

Yeah....I shot 3-4" with a scope off a bench....which isn't nearly accurate enough.

But I've heard a few people recommend a heavier 62 or 69 grain bullet.

I'm going start handloading some soon enough, maybe around summertime and start experimenting.

Handloading helps if accuracy is what you are after.

2" groups as long as I do my part with my reloads.

You won't really save much over bulk .223 when reloading, but you can crank out accurate loads that are tailored to your firearm.

Start reloading ASAP, and not just for .223.

Well...I already load for my 9mm, but because I dread doing any sort of case prep, I haven't yet begun reloading for my rifle.

Also, I have around 1500 rounds to burn through before I really need to start reloading.

I'm pretty sure I can save a almost 1/2 by reloading though. Even on sale, bulk .223 is $450 per thousand rounds, I think I can probably reload 1000 rounds for around $250-$275

Under ideal circumstances, with a heavy barreled 1:8" twist AR-15, decent trigger and shooting off bags, I get frustrating and erratic performance from standard grade 223 ammunition. A couple touching, then one 1" low and another an inch high at 100 yards. With match grade ammo or hand loads, I can shoot 10 into an inch at 100 yards. But with Remington, Winchester or American Eagle cheap ammo, anything is possible, a good group, a lousy group. Nothing crazy like 4" groups, but just frustrating points of impact that I don't think reflect the capabilities of the equipment.
