Can someone tell me what this pin and spring are for and where they go , and possiblly why it was rattling around inside my rifle ?

Check the buffer, maybe its jammed in the tube abit and the lack of tension caused the spring and pin to drop out. Have a look at your castle nut and see if its lose abit causing the tube to back off abit. As pictured above the pin with the spring inside is retained with a small amount of the buffer tube on top of it, not enough to bind it though, just to retain and depress it.

The buffer plays no part in retaining the pin or spring. The pin is under spring pressure and held in place by the front of the buffer tube. The amount buffer tube capturing the pin and spring will depending on how much you thread the tube into the receiver. My guess would be that the tube could have used one more turn into the receiver.

To the OP, how is your buffer in your rifle right now?

On some crappier rifles the buffer can get wedged back in the tube, the threads can get chewed up abit and the tube can slip back. Ive seen this on some that had locktite applied and were removed and retightened a few times.

Another good reason to stake the nut and not use thread locker.

make sure this nut is tight, use the right wrench to do it.

When done should look like this.

f**k CGN is a beauty, right on. I love it when I see threads like this!!! Thumbs up!

I couldn't agree more. A member posts a problem and within the hour has a fix, advice for preventing the problem from happening again, as well as some knowledge gained. Well done gents.

I will see if I can get a pic "what not to do", I have a really mangled buffer tube from a few years ago. For ARs I have had good luck with some service manuals that you can get at Brownells. Theres a few decent ones that list basic service and repair and some others that help with adding on other aftermarket parts.
