How much will it get bigger?

I am looking into a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 with the MOA reticle. I am trying to decide on whether I should get the FFP or the SFP model.

I do like the FFP for the fact that the graduations on the reticle stay the same no matter what magnification is used. But I wonder how much the lines get bigger as magnification increases. How much will they block out at 600yards?

They will block out the exact same at 600 as they would 100 relative to the target because both the reticle and the target "grow" at the same rate. Here is a link to the subtension detail and specs for the scope you are asking about, it claims the reticle covers 0.18 MOA...

based on a line thickness of 0.18 MOA, it would be like painting a 1" thick line directly on your target at 550 yards. if your target walks up to the 200 yard point, it will be like he has a 1/3" thick line painted on him. if he moves back to 1,000 yards, he's wearing a line that's nearly 2" thick.

these are lines that you would "paint" directly onto your target's clothing. a guy in a suit wearing a tie - the tie at 1,000 yards would be covered by the line. at 500 yards, only half the tie would be covered.
 
I have the SFP version, and with out having taken a shot with it yet, I prefer it for strict target shooting. If I was a legitmate tactical user, I think I would give more consideration to the FFP for the ability to estimate range and calculate holdovers right through the scope.

Hey Hey !!! im impressed ! I take it your still researching info on your quest for a good Reticule ? well done.

To the original poster. FFP scopes are more expensive but if you want to actually use your mil dots correct, and have the ability to use a zoom scope at the same time they are the way to go.

on a 6x24 you can get away with out a FFP. the reticule (excuse me for limited viper experience) should be set for 12x zoom. In this case if you wana use your mil dots, multiply by 2 @ 6x and divide by 2 when ur on 24x zoom.

ya, i've all but decided that on the savage dime-puncher, it'll be a fixed or a FFP zoom in a 6-24 / 8-32 range. cost might be an issue, but learning and shooting skill gained can probably offset that. and if i'm gonna spend the $$$ on a FFP zoom, i'm gonna learn as much as i can before doing so! a $1000 scope on a $500 rifle. hmm.... meh!

Ya know what, even if you spend a grand on a scope, Its gona last. epically a sightron with there life time warranty. Nothing says just because its on a $500 gun does not mean you can not put it on a new long range rig in the future ! Might be more cost effective to go good now and not need to sell and buy again in the future.

sorry i couldn't resist. I've been attempting to resist for the better part of an hour, but i just can't.
 
Now you guys have me wondering again. This scope will be going on a rifle that will be mainly used for hunting from blinds and some "for fun" target shooting. So now I'm wondering if the FFP would be best so that I wouldn't have to do math while coming down with buck fever. I wouldn't likely take a shot at anything over 5-600 yards until I felt sure that my skills were up to the task. Even now I don't think I'd be shooting at an animal at 5-600. More like 3-400 for now. But I am trying to think ahead to when I do get more comfortable and am looking to expand the range without having to buy a new scope.

P.S. ndb86- She always says," I hope it don't get any bigger!" to me.:p:D
 
watch ffp scopes for hunting .Some of the reticals are quite hard to see at the lower end I have a 1.25 to 6 s&b with a fine crosshair I mostly dont bring it below 2x unless snow is on the ground.
