So I just purchased one of these and am looking forward to taking it on my spring bear hunt. Open sights only for me with this baby, I'll be shooting 330 grain hardcast boolit from its 20"barrel.

I am curious as to what experiences others have had shooting similar rifles at game?

Cheers, Troutseeker

I have a 44 Mag 1894 Cowboy. I love it but have only shot small game, and mostly targets, with it. I am sure it would do fine for bear, but I justify owning my 450 Marlin and 348 WCF by taking them on hunts for the big stuff.

Whatever bullet your decide on, make sure it feeds perfectly every time, sharp edges on the bullets may not be your friend, remember Murphy's law when on the bear stand, "what can go wrong, will".

At the speeds you can push those big heavies in a 20" barrel you'll likely find they will travel end to end on a decent sized blackie ! Mine sure did

Does make me wonder why I went to the 45-70 for Blackies ?;)

Lottsa thump in that Lil 44 from a carbine, no doubt about it.

Nope, it's not real old, but it ain't new! I'll let you guys know, but I suspect it will do just fine.

Just as a point of interest for age, how does it compare with mine.

s/n 0803XX65.

There are numbers in place of the Xes. There is probably a code in those numbers for indicating when it was made, but haven't bothered looking it up.
I haven't shot the 300 grain, but the 240s, with wheel weights, or a bit harder, work very well.
I have a Williams Fool Proof aperature on it, which greatly increases it's sighting ability.
In my mind, the finishing and general appearance of this vintage is head and shoulders over the new ones.

Your rifle should have been produced in 1992 if IIRC.
