Why the plethora of AR Shorties?

Lighter, more compact, and in Canada a 11.5" AR and a 20" AR are the same classification, and they can both only be used as range guns. The little bit of velocity and energy lost don't matter when you're punching paper.

Actually, it all started in early 60's.
I have to run a shorty weapons system for when I debuss under fire from Zombaroonies at the range. The extra 7" of barrel is too much weight to carry from my bedroom to the trunk of the car, and I would probably get stuck in the door, with all the must go kit I deploy with. I am currently running a Velcro goatee.

They looked kool then and they look even better now--seriously though the USA looked at the difference between a 20" and a 16" in terms of velocity,accuracy and terminal balistics long and hard and concluded that a 16" would do everything that a 20" barrel could do.Some changes to twist rate as well as bullet development over the years have made short AR's a reliable much more handlable option.Especially urban enviorments(Iraq,afganistan). Shorter barrels in special forces enviroment-small boats,jumping out of planes,Riding in jeep/humvees have proven their worth.
Nowadays you can purchase a match grade 1:7- 12.5" barrel,and surplus or "cheap ammo" and make hits consistantly at 300m. on 6"plates. With quallity ammo maybe even better(better bullets,better powder,better loading practices all make a diff.)
Oh almost forgot- you can now in regular gun case take 2 of them to the range instead of just one HAHA

Got it. I took it the wrong way. I have never been into the black rifle but am coming to appreciate it's great accuracy. I was only trying to discover why people opted for the shorter barrels. Should have done more research. My bias is for a longer barrel but do appreciate the shorter carbines with the pencil barrels. The older C-8's with the A1 profile barrel weigh as much as pistols. In the system but only for non-infantry afaik. Only seen these overseas with guys from the Guns.
