As usually happens this time of year, (that time of year being any month with more than 27 days in it), I got the itch to buy a new rifle. Normally I have to suppress this desire due to lack of monies in my bank account. However, this time I have found the lack of availability may be the biggest problem.

Most cgn sponsors seem to be out of m44's (carbine length nagants).

Does this mean the supplies have dried up for good? Or will there be future shipments from cold-war stockpiles around the world?

That's just part of the milsurp-itis condition.

When you want one of something, its never around. When you finally settle for a rifle you've been waiting for, a flood of better rifles become available all of the sudden.

If you have something specific in mind, just wait. M-44's pop up in the EE all the time, and as mentioned, they are available at P&S if East German is cool with you.

I picked up one from P&S a few weeks ago. Great shape for 175 bucks, East German model. Can't wait to shoot it. I scanned thru their site last week, it looks like only a few left.

Where you are in the 'Soviet Republic of Canada' matters.
"...reviews on the East German ones..." Key is 'marked'. I wouldn't put any money on it, but I don't think the East Germans actually made 'em. Got 'em from Uncle Joe. Difference between an M44 and an M38 is the bayonet.
"...just part of the milsurp-itis condition..." Yep. Milsurps do that.

They are made in russia i think but stamped with german marking, that's all.

X2

But they really don't show much wear and tear, or at least this one doesn't. When I slugged the bore, the rifling was sharp and very heavy. This rifle was not used very much in terms of Military Surplus. Has the odd bump and bruise from crating and handling, but otherwise very good + condition. Haven't shot it yet, weather here has been really cold, snow blizzard, or both. But soon...

Pics of youe E. German rifle? Just bought a Polish M44 1953 all matching, $425 + tax / shipping. Now I see East German ones...mine still has cosmo, never fired, brand new. Still feel like I paid a bit too much, no?

The Polish ones came in a while back, they were some of the nicest East Block rifles I've seen. To me they're well worth what you paid.

Naw, your rifle is NEW - the E.G. carbines are refurbs. Mine has a nice blond laminate replacement stock, rather crude receiver markings and the standard Russian black oxide type finish. A very handy shooter, a fun collectible but NOT new.

Keep in mind tho, you paid the premium for an unfired rifle. First time you send a round down the spout it stops being a $400 rifle.
