Impossible Question?

Hey guys and gals, I have one of those "damn near impossible questions" to ask.

My spouse's uncle has a couple of winchester rifles with scopes that he wants to sell me. I asked him about the vintage, model, etc. and he didnt know a thing about them.

He told me there was a 270 or 308, and a 30-06, he thought they were semi auto's, and he has scopes for them, but has no clue on what kind.

Im predicting early to mid 80's (just because of his past, he got divorced shortly after the mid 80's) and he wants me to offer him something for them.

He is gonna give me a deal on them, but I would like to know if anyone has a remote idea what kind of value a guy could place on this kind of stuff, or what to look for when I do go to buy them (I dont see him often enough to make several trips, it will be a go to look at them, buy them the same day, type deal)

I know its a hard question to ask, and I dont have a clue on more info, and know its hard to get a really accurate value, but...

Thanks, for all advice opinions, etc.

he can easily email you pics. make sure you let him know that it is for his benefit so that you can offer him a fair price. Even the quality of optic can make a big difference

It's not hard to get a value........it's impossible.

It's the same as asking for an estimate on the value of a car......without knowing the year or even the model ????

Your gonna need to supply abit more info.......

Well, it isn't quite impossible.
Make Winchester. Year, about 1980. Action, semi auto?
1) Model 100, 308. Scope unknown. Market value, $475/550.

Can't figure out the 30-06 (likely). He thinks they are semi autos, so maybe the second one is a "270 Winchester," but the rifle is a Remington auto.
About the same price range as #1.

So, if full retail value is about $1,000., go from there. A great deal he has in mind may be in the order of $600. Maybe even less.

If the rifles turn out to be completely different, play it by ear. Sounds like you will get a deal, in any case.

It's impossible based on the complete lack of info....he wasn't sure of any of the info other then a couple of Winchester Rifles, without assuming there's not much to go with, maybes and guesses that's all;)

Why don't you get him to read you the model #'s off the actions?
The guns are out at a farm, and he lives in the city, so hes not very close and its almost a "hassle" for him to go out there, just for that. His brother lives at the farm, but doesnt have the keys to the cabinet, and the brothers dont get along well.

I thought of pics too, but he just doesnt make it out to that farm anymore!

Yeah I realize more info is needed, but it looks like its gonna be very hard to get that info, before the time I go to pick them up! Thanks though.

Thanks man, I appreciate your guesstimate! Again I know its the impossible question! I was thinking id offer him 600 for the whole works, including the ammo and cabinet and whatnot, and if they turn out to be crappy guns, take my losses.

At $600 for the pair you'd likely still break even if they're not such great rifles. I'd go for it.

The M-100 was a short action, manufactured from '61-'73, so chances are they are Remington 740s or 742s or Browning BARs. A Remington might go $400 if its in nice shape, but a BAR is tougher to price, it could be worth as little as $500 or well over $3K depending on condition and grade.

Since he does not know what they are, is cloudy on the calibres, rural, and in dispute . . . my guess is they are not registered. Not really a problem but make sure the CFC is open when you pick them up. Sounds like a short holiday could be very entertaining and rewarding.

I thought I was buying a Winchester once . . . that was the owner's best guess . . . because it was a .243 Winchester? You can imagine my disappointment when it turned out to be a Reminton 700 BDL . . . and sometime later the scope arrived!

Sounds like preppypro needs to go on a mystery drive.
Eye'd be all over that like a wet t-shirt on a set of 38's.
Giddeeeupgo before they do.
Reminds me of a deal my dear friend was offered. A complete RCBS reloading
kit with all the trimm'ins. All he had to do was drive a few hundred k's and get it.
Go eye say. He snoozed and his uncle sold the stuff el cheepo.
Two hundred a rifle?
Go!! ;)

Rural Saskatoon.. well maybe you prefer the RM of Corman Park? haha Most people dont know RM's so I went with Rural Saskatoon!
