Hello everyone,

Based upon the lack of results returned from my searches, I seem to be the only one with this problem. Either that, or the trained monkey I use to perform searches failed me yet again... ;)

Seems to me that most people have a heck of a time removing the pin that keeps the lower hand guard on the 858. Well I have the exact opposite problem. The bloody pin, and the little metal cap that goes on the end of the lower hand guard won't stay on/in for the life of me. One end of the pin has a slight flare to it that prevents it from sliding through, but the other end seems to be a straight cylinder, and slides quite easily. I've almost lost the pin, and metal cap a few times already, and I've only had the rife for a week.

I know I should probably send it back, or whatnot, but I'm hoping for a homegrown solution to this problem, such that I can avoid the shipping cost etc. I'd rather not tape the thing in there (too hokey), or use lockite, as that's too permanent.

Do any of you gurus out there have a slick solution to this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Cal.

Try (lightly) center punching the edge of the hole where the non-flared end is to make the hole a little smaller OR give the non-flared end a bang with a hammer to force it slightly out of round and thus a tight fit on the hole OR get some appropriately sized drill rod (metal supermarket) and make your own pin OR use nonpermanent locktite for smaller screws OR use some 5 minute epoxy, as it will not rattle loose, but nor will it stand up to a drift and a tap from a hammer.

I'm sure I've missed something blindingly obvious and cheap, but this is all I can think of for now.....

Thanks V-Max,

I'm not sure what you mean by "center punching the edge of the hole where the non-flared end is to make the hole a little smaller". Can you elaborate?

As I'm new to this rifle, will I not need to remove the lower hand guard fairly frequently to clean it? I'm shooting corrosive ammo, and assumed that I should be cleaning the whole kit and kaboodle each and every time.

Thanks,
Cal.

Flare the end of the pin, so that it makes a tighter fit. Thus, the hole the pin goes into will be smaller :p

You'll be fine keeping the lower handguard on. The worst you'll get in there (from my experience) is some carbon buildup. Same stuff that gets onto your gas piston. If it does have the corrosive salts on it, it's going to take a while to eat through the paint anyways, since from what I've seen that paint is tougher than damn near anything out there.

flare

I just hit it on the end with a hammer a couple times... ofcourse i treat mine like a war horse or a quote "biker chick" not a "prom queen" ar15 ;) Cz's also make a good bottle opener. :D

Or get a roll-pin like NEA includes with their lower handguards. As seen below:

I imagine most fastener or industrial supply houses would have them. If you measure the diameter of the factory pin, get the closest larger size of roll pin. You may have to trim the length.

They've got some "give" in them so you can drive in one slightly larger than the factory pin without much trouble.

I lost my pin to. i managed to find a pin at work that fit.
Not sure what they are called but ive seen them at Home Hardware. Any hardware store should carry them.

Give it a tap with a hammer, its a little tight.
Use a punch to pop it out.

The roll pin suggestion is best, I have replaced mine and it works great.

However in the interim if you are going shooting and don't want to loose your pin you can "Mcgyver" it. Just wedge a little material (a very thin length of nomex in my case) in the front grove of the hand guard slot before you put your hand guard back on. This will put back pressure on the pin and hold it in place quite tight; I needed a punch to get the pin in and out. Although it worked like a charm a roll pin is best.

mine actually fell out onto the range floor, it's first trip! That night I saw this thread and bought a roll pin from Home Depot, and it works great. Had to cut/file it to shorten it, but that's to be expected really!

i have had the same issue and glued it just a little bit with engine gasket silicone easy to repop out rub it clean with finger nails and re glue it after cleaning
