I think Canada suffers a little from "too much space" it makes it too easy for the "not in my back yard" people to prevail. In Europe, everywhere is someone's back yard, and people just have to learn to get along. If they can do this in Germany, there might be hope for us yet!
 
Good story Longwalker... I have a friend who has also hunted in Germany, but not so close to residential areas.

Europeans have respect for game and hunters.

Im not sure why some people dont respect the idea in north america.
I guess they are suffering from "too much space" between the ears...:D
 
Great pictures Longwalker... looks like a really interesting experience - and a great example of how responsibility should conquer bloodymindedness. I wish they'd let us do squirrel hunting in urban parks here!

As for the crossbow vs. traditional/recurve/compound - the reality is there is a difference, and it was summed up very well by the owner of a hunting store I once knew.

Crossbows are for guys who want the simplicity (and relative brainlessness - dont flame me.) of a rifle, with the advantages of a crossbow. Namely: earlier/longer season, quieter, cheaper, etc, etc.

Other bows represent something with a MUCH steeper learning curve. It requires a higher than average degree of physical fitness (or at least, practice). It requires investing in a skill, and keeping both skill and fitness levels either maintained for the whole year or making sure you invest even more before the season to get them to where they need to be.

Crossbows - Cletus just needs to crank back the string and drop in a bolt.
Now I'm sure there are lots of members here who are decent, responsible guys who have arrived at crossbows at the end of a path of consideration, experimentation and intelligent, conscious thought. If you're one of them, gear down on hating me, but also realize that for every one of you, there are ten guys who say the equivalent of "Heeyuck, I gotta get me one of them" - for the above-mentioned reasons.

Proving the safety and appropriety of the crossbow as a hunting implement will be dependent upon the character of those using it - as such, it will be an uphill battle.

You, quite obviously: A. Are a non crossbow hunter and B: don't have a ####ing clue what you speak of.

Traditonal tackle does take more practice than a compound or crossbow set-up. That being there are many reasons to take up any of the three, there are stinkers in all three disciplines. Crossbows are just a media target.

Painting X-bow shooters as hicks is in-correct.

However flying of the handle at someone who does just illustrates that we are eager to slit each others throats. Look what happened in BC, we sold each other out, look how far that got us.

it's attitudes like this that divides hunters and then hunting get banned in places like in the story. If bowhunters had actually stood up and fougth a little harder, instead of pointing a finger at crossbow hunters, maybe this wouldn't have happened. Now everybody that shoots pointy sticks have lost an opportunity. Hell, I certainly fought against this and I dont' even bow hunt.

He's pretty common sense, knows this move has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with an anti hunting agenda, but he is but one. And when you get a traditional bow hunter agreeing that crossbows should be banned, well, what do you think is going to happen. Just like Fudds and handguns...
 
Back to my comment about contrasts between Europe and here.... I don't think what equipment a hunter uses matters at all! What matters is attitude, training, respect, and care. If Europeans can hunt driven game with rifles in housing developments safely and productively, I'm equally certain it can be accomplished by Canadians in Whistler. With crossbows. Or 30-06's. Or self bows and flint tipped wooden arrows! Hunting is hunting the world over. Don't give the NIMBY's an excuse to use you as an example of a slob hunter, but don't let them prevail!
We also need to learn from the European example as hunters - there is a great social peer pressure there not to take "hope" shots, not to take unsafe shots, but to make every shot a safe, clean, killing shot. They are not afraid to reprimand fellow hunters for bad behavior.
We should not be afraid of debate within our ranks either. But all Canadian hunters should defend hunting by any legal and ethical method to all the public "Banners" and limit our public "infighting".

Well said,People need to realise that hunting is hunting, no matter if we bait our deer with apples, tree cougars with dogs, stick bears with crossbow bolts or just plain shoot them.

We are all in this together, people need to realise that the people who put down other methods are as dangerous to us as the greenest,seal humping, granola munching,prius driving,metrosexual Hippy. We can't afford to have members of our own ranks running other members through the dirt.

Although only a rifle hunter, I admire and support all other types of hunting. Muzzleloader, bow and crossbow are all legitimate ways to hunt and any of us that adopt an elitist "my way is the only way" attitude does a disservice to the remainder. If you look at our two Canadian hunting shows and the hosts/co-hosts they ALL use crossbows, bows, muzzleloaders, shotguns and rifles. That is all the legitimacy I see required to convince me to continue all methods of hunting. In fact if there were those in Canada that wanted to hunt boar with spear or a knife them I would support that!! Lets stop fighting each other, children, or we will all lose!!
