Greeting ALL.
I'm a Newbie with a 14 year old son looking to spend some time together doing some plinking at one of the local gun ranges come spring and I'd be interested in some opinions about buying a decent, inexpensive (under $300) bolt action rifle.
I've narrowed our choices down to the Marlin XT22 series and the Savage Mark II series (Model F or G).
I know from the many threads how many Savage shooters there are, but I'm leaning to the Marlin because we've settled on the 795SS Semi-Auto as our "fun at the range" gun and I presume I can interchange the Marlin accessories (please correct me if I'm wrong here)
Any feed back, experiences, or opinions on either choice would be appreciated.

I am a fan of both Marlin 981T and Model 60 as well as Savage MKI and MKII rifles.

IMO, a Marlin XT22 with their version of the Accutrigger, should be as accurate or possibly more so (with ammo that each rifle prefers) than the Savage MK rifles. This is just based on my belief that the Marlin Micro-groove rifling is better than the rifling used by Savage....JMO and I am usually wrong.:D

My Marlin 981T and 60 can group almost as tightly as the Savage MKIIF with Accutrigger. Same cheap Win bulk ammo, at 100 meters.

I like both but prefer marlins. and the magazines will be interchangeable. Go for the marlin!

Good question on many levels - father and son activity; .22LR for learning; asking for advice; and doing some research before asking the questions.

If you want a bolt and a semi, get them from the same company so the mags are interchangeable. There is nothing less fun than having to stop and reload the one mag that fits your gun. It means breaking position and losing concentration.

With premium target ammo, a Savage with a heavy barrel and AccuTrigger should be able to shoot down to the 1/4"-3/8" range (5 shots at 50 yards).

Thanks Gents

Really appreciate the feedback.
Easy - Really good to know that the cheaper bulk ammo is a usable option. I had not thought about the type of ammo either make would use best.

mikey - Thanks for confirming the mag interchange. It wouldn't be the first time different models can't share accessories (not necessarily fire arms related just personal experience )

maple_leaf - Appreciate the compliment. And the advice. Just in my nature I guess to find out what I can then ask the experts to fill in the blanks before making the final decision. I want to make sure we have the most fun every weekend and don't have to buy things twice or three times.

I'm very excited, the Le Barons around the corner from the office has both Marlins in stock as well as 10 round mags for $15 each. We should be shooting by April CFO willing :)

Cheers

Thanks but could you Elaborate?

I would only go with the Marlin right now if I could guarantee it was made by old Marlin not the new remi-Marlin.

Could you elaborate a bit. As I said I'm a Newbie, so sorry if I'm being a bit obtuse. When you say "old Marlin", manufactured before what year?? When you refer to new "remi-Marlin" can you explain the difference between these and the older models?

Thanks in advance
