Whats your go-to rifle for Aiviq(Walrus) ...

It's been a long while since I wrote a thread in the hunting forum ... so here goes, if you had the opportunity to hunt a Aiviq(Walrus) what calibre rifle would you use? :D

i would use my 300 wsm loaded with 168 gr ttsx

or if i could get under 100 yards the 45-70 loaded with 300gr tsx or 350gr hornady fp

they're my go to guns when i'm not sure what i'll see
 
Is the walrus on shore, swimming or swimming with a harpoon in it? Can I harpoon it?:D

Haveing never done it, I would say for a brain shot on shore I'd use whatever accurate scope sighted rifle I though I could make the shot with.

For shooting something that's partially tied up, I'd go with whatever big rifle I wanted to get rusty.
 
HA HA That brings back memories.

I used to teach in Inukjuak, and I remember in culture class(kinda like woodshop) the favourite project was a harpoon. The teacher was right into making harpoons with the kids. And they ended up with good ones.

I used to love looking at the expressions of the city teachers watching the kids walking through the halls with their harpoons in hands. And truth be said, I think the kids like it even more and milked it bad with the naive teachers.

Bwahahaha, rotten kids. How many times I woudl hear a 1st year teacher scared because there was a polar bear loose in town. HA HA
 
I'd go with my .308 Savage 99, I don't think there is much it can't kill if I do my part. Every time I'm up in the arctic or near arctic I want o try hunting there, oh well maybe one of these times I'll get a chance to hunt there.
 
I guess it would depend upon how the hunt was conducted. I expect you can hunt walrus on the sea ice or on shore, in which case any reasonably accurate scoped hunting rifle would do the trick. But if hunting from a boat, that might require more thought. If you shoot a walrus on an ice pan, will he sink if he gets into the water before you can get a harpoon into him?
 
A 303 brit would fit in nicely cause thats what the natives use for the most I'm guesing?....

Its not like they are the greatest cal but their ammo is cheap and the rifle reasonably accurate at close range with fmj... and head shots are the norm.:)
 
If they were on the ice, I'd use my 444 with a nice cast bullet of air cooled WW weighing about 350 gr. Then I would gut shoot them.....



..............with the point of entry two thirds of the way up the skull.

Looking at my limited selection, it would be a 30-06 with 220 grn or 6.5 55 with 160 grn ( or maybe TSX 140). I'm thinking you would need to penetrate alot of mass on a body shot, but where are the vitals?

I really have no clue what it would take to kill one, what do you consider adequate Otokiak? Is a brain shot usually taken for the kill?
 
Anything that starts with at least a 3.

If you got balls o steel, dogs and a spear. Maybe not legal. Would be interesting though.
 
Is it head shots or body shots? Doesn't matter. I would take my .375H&H, or possible a .45-70. If I'm going on a once-in-a-lifetime hunt for a critter that exotic in an area of the world that unique, I'm going to use something cool, something with a lot of tradition and personal history, something I love shooting and trust implicitly.

If I didn't feel that way I'd probably use a .375Ruger.:Dcou:
