My grandfather had a 1918 303 brit. he used for deer. and a 1924 Savage 99 in 300 sav. he used for Moose. I have had them both for 30 years and Have never shot either of them.
Then you should sell them both to me.

I've not hunted with a 300 Savage, but I have hunted with a .308win, and a 30-30. The 30-30 is only a couple hundred fps slower than the 300Sav, so I'm sure it can do anything the 300 Sav can do!![]()
[Especially in a box magazine rifle like the savage 340!]
I'm not knocking the 300 Savage. What I'm knocking is the continual notion that any given cartridge is just as good as another cartridge which shoots the same bullets, but with a 200-300 fps velocity difference.
If 200-300 fps make no difference, then do 400-600 fps? How about 600-800? Where do you draw the line?

Then you should sell them both to me.
I was thinking of deactivating and hanging them on a wall.

Well I certainly think it plays a role, don't you?hope with your message you re not telling us that is the speed of bullet that s killing animal.![]()

Why?
So wait, the 300 savage can do anything the 308win can. The 308win can do anything the 30-06 can. And the 30-06 can do anything the 300 Win Mag can.

I was wrong when I said the .300 Savage will do anything the .308 can.
The .300 Savage wont feed properly through an M-60 LMG.
Or an FN...or an HK...
Luckily you wont have to explain these technicalities to any deer or moose you shoot with the .300 Savage.
You can however explain to them that they were bowled over by a bullet only going 2500 fps instead of 2800 fps while you're gutting them out.
The 300 Savage is an excellent round that I highly recommend and as far as I am concerned the round that should have been introduced instead of the 308 Win for military use if they had of we would not be using 223 now...
I agree, considering what they envisioned as an improvement, the .300 Savage would have been a better replacement for the .30/06 than the 7.62X51.
the cgn velocity nutz can argue all you want. The true fact is .300 savage,.308 win, or the 30-06 sprg= dead moose, deer, bear etc. Etc, etc. 250 fps faster, slower doesn't mean much, except to a handloader through a chronograph. But to each is own. That's just my opinion. I own all three, mind you i have never killed a big game animal with a .308 win. Maybe this year.
Alberta bigbore. Get a .300 savage, you will be glad you did. In my neck of the woods i'm the only one who uses one. I have a 760 rem, and a savage 99. Both are fun. Just my two cents!
Dave.
