What would you recommend for holster/mag holder for a new guy?

This will be for a M&P 9mm, left handed shooter.

I dont know what to look for in a good belt. 1.5, 2 inches? Any reason go to wider or smaller. I got a 42 waist so not all models go that big from what I have seen so far.

Holsters, i've seen Uncle Mikes, Blackhawk, bladetech.

Price is not really a concern within reason, I want something that wont scratch/scuff the slide as much as possible.

Once the white #### outside melts, my club will have some black badges courses setup... cant wait.

If you want a dual-purpose IPSC/IDPA rig, then go with a 1.5" belt since that should fit most pant loops. Anything much wider and you may have to look a bit to find pants that accomodate a wide belt. Bladetech makes a decent holster and pouches. Also check out CompTac. I have several of each and find the CompTac a bit more comfortable to wear since the holster follows the curve of your hip a bit better.

For the M&P, you can buy a Bladetech DOH hoster for IPSC. Just unscrew and take off the drop & offset part, you are good for IDPA.
Mag pouches, buy either Ghost pouches or CR Speed will not go wrong.:D

If you're looking for equipment to do both, you'll have to tread carefully.

A lot of the IPSC belts and CR speed gear isn't IDPA legal. If you're planning on having two different rigs, which many guys do, your choices between the two sports will probably be completely different.

Not having read all the rulebooks for both yet, care to explain what's the difference? Or more what are the limitations of one or the other?

IPSC will be on the books this summer for sure, IPDA, i'll see how things go.
 
Well...its common in IPSC to see inners/outer belts. They are convenient as the outer belt keeps all the mag pouches and the holster in the same place, just throw it on and you're good to go. These are not legal in IDPA. Belts in IDPA have to pass through nearly all the loops and be no wide than 1.75 inches, and there is a width requirement as well. There is also a requirement for how close your gun and magazines are to your body (this is usually determined by the equipment).

In IDPA, unless you're a female, dropped and offset holsters are not allowed. Most holsters have this as a removable option, but that gets annoying if you shoot both regularly

In general, in IDPA, any gear marked and marketed as competition only, like CR Speed gear is non-legal, even if it does meet the requirements set out for mag pouches and holsters (which often it doesn't).

There are a lot of different rules, just know that the popular IPSC gear usually won't work for IDPA. If you stick with basic stuff, you should be okay.

I shoot IPSC with my IDPA gear and although I'm not yet winning, I'm still doing alright.

If you're just looking to have a good time shooting both, and not necessarily gunning for grand master, you'll save a ton of money by getting gear that works for both.

As you'll soon see, decent IPSC gear is quite pricey!

I believe that this guy is a IDPA SME so he knows the game and the gear.
In a "nutshell" IPSC is more of a game, you don't really use cover or concealment, from what I remember?
IDPA is more realistic, pistols and holsters purchased for concealed carry, you do use, I believe cover and concealment.Most of the scenarios
are stuff like " bad day at the Kwik-E-Mart" etc?
I'm really going from memory here so everything is not "verbatim"
 
I bought my kids Fobus for their first holsters for their G17s

I hated them and soon bought them Ghosts for them when I bought them Tanfiglio Stocks.

I have a Blackhawk for the G17s that is ok.

But I much prefer the bladetch DOH model.
 
Man why you guys gotta hate the fobus? lol Sure i wouldn't use it for IPSC but the new ones have that retention screw which makes it worlds better imo but... anyway.... you got lots of recommendations on here.
