A buddy of mine and I were discussing what our "favorite" hunts were. We both agreed we loved blacktail deer hunting, any alpine hunting (sheep, goats, mule deer) but grizzly hunting is very up on the list, because it is a great adrenaline rush.

In North America, the grizzly and polar bear are the only true dangerous game animals that we can hunt (although everything can be dangerous, given the opportunity)

Looking at Africa, there are lots of big and scratchy or good stomping animals.

I've never had a desire to hunt elephant. leopards are scratchy but rarely fatal. Buffalo, hippo and lions seem to be the ones that kick some ass if you aren't into elephant hunting. The only one that actually makes me wonder about it in a charge situation is the lion. They are very capable of killing a human with one swipe of thier paw or bite from their jaws, and they are sooo fast!

Judging from cougar hunting, cats are fast, smart and mean, although not that tough. A lion is like a cougar on steroids, so that is the only animal that I think is actually spooky...:p

I doubt I will ever hunt lions, though. I'd only want to hunt a big mature male with a big mane, and it appears to me that most are on the decline.

What animal do you think is spooky or scary to hunt?
 
I was always under the impression that Leopard hunting was alot more dangerous than Lion hunting and that Leopards kill more people?

A friend of mine has a farm out in the country. Her neighbor owns a large "roadside" zoo. They have a few lions. In the summer you can hear them roar.. many a time I wonder what would happen if one escaped.
 
Apparently leopards are more likely to scratch and bite the hell out of you, but it's rarely fatal. Sorta like a cougar, they are similar size and not likely to kill a full grown man if he can fight and not just lie down and cry.

Lions are much larger and rip you open with a good claw hook or 2...:eek:
 
I want to go to Africa to hunt Cape buffalo. Anything else I would shoot over there would be for to try the meat while I was there. I am starting to dream about Cape buffalo

There is a video of some guys in africa hunting a trouble lion that was deemed a man eater and was coming to a village and killing people.

They had it cornered in a thicket, and the cat came running full tilt at the group of guys, they shot the lion 4-5 time on the run, there was a guy kneeling aimed at it. The lion was mid air, claws out about 3 feet from this guy, he falls on his ass and fires from the hip, hitting the lion square between its eyes killing it, and the lion knocked him over and was laying dead right beside him.

The guy just laughs it off like nothing. The video is on youtube. Search "crazy lion hunt" or something like that, ill find the video when I get home and post it

What animal do you think is spooky or scary to hunt?
white tailed deer kill more people every year than any other in north america.
I've had many close encounters. they pop out of nowhere then BANG! your in the ditch wondering what happened. however i think 1200 pound Alaskan grizzly in bush that you cant see more than ten feet in any direction would be worrisome at best. plus they need a large rifle or a stopper in this case.
i read an article called the "dinner bell" where the author likened the report of a rifle to attract other bears because they were accustomed to finding food where they heard the sound. that would make skinning exciting.

I've never hunted either, but in reading lots of old books on African hunters/hunting most consider the leopard more formidable. Many state that a wounded lion will give a roar or similar signal sound immediately before a charge whereas a leopard attacks without warning.

I've also heard the same as you state above, that if there's a hunting party a wounded leopard will try to scratch and bite the hell out of everyone, but a lion will single out one person and go to town. :eek:
 
Lions are one of those iconic animals that makes Africa, Africa. The certainly added spice to our trip.

MGM lion, you know you have a trophy when the mane is too heavy to see the ears.

I can look at this picture all day long and keep finding lions hidden in the grass; they were annoyed with us for making the gazelles nervous.

Well I've never been on a safari, but if I get a chance, cape buffalo and leopard will be my choice.

I think I read that if a leopard catches you, they'll hang on with the front paw and bite that area while the back legs will kick and possibly gut you. This is all secondary info from books, but having lived with a cat, I can see how this could ruin your day.

I think I would take a buffalo if I can only afford one animal tho. Regular domesticated bull already scared the crap out of me, I think a beefy wild one would be rather exciting.
 
"...kill more people..." Hippos and crocodiles kill more people than any other beast in Africa. Seems to me it's in that order too.
 
I've heard that, too, but that's people in general. I wonder if it changes when you consider what animal kills the most hunters that are hunting it.
 
Most dangerous? Who knows? Opinions seem to vary among African PH's, and I'll bet they personally vote for whichever species most recently took a crack at them.

Kills the most people? As stated above, not the same thing as being dangerous when hunted. The Hippo is in first place, but kills mostly fishermen, or people who stumble into one on land at night. I've stalked up close to buffalo, surprised (and been surprised by) lions, and spent most of my hunting trip running/sneaking/briskly walking away from elephants.

For me, the absolute scariest critters out there are bears, any species of bear. Can't explain it, and have only ever hunted black bear, and I do love hunting them...but bears just totally creep me out.
 
BS hunt. The arrows didn't do the job. The PH hammered it with a rifle. I'd like to see the guy do that without that back up rifle. Over here in Canada you don't see us going after those killer white tails with a rifle to back us up.

We're just tougher in this country I guess.

That would be buffalo, but its a numbers game. There's more buffalo, more buffalo hunts and more buffalo hunters than anything else, and by quite a margin.

Buffalo about 10% of elephant hunting, and it's still a pretty good time. We had a herd of a couple hundred buff run right over us in the Matetsi River thickets, which was a pretty good time in a white knuckle sort of way. That one might have gone 25%.

My griz experience is limited to shooting one at 66 yards and seeing another shot at about the same distance on the same hunt. The guide said "What makes it all worth while is how excited you guys get" then burst out laughing. Then something to the effect that only a couple of Canadian elephant hunters could pop a couple of grizzlies and shrug.

My vote is for elephant. There's elephant huntin, then there's everything else.
