I have a Schidt Rubin 1889 with the rear locking lugs as opposed to the forward locking lugs. Does anybody know what calibre and how rare this rifle is? I think it may be 7.5X53.5, but I am not sure as there is no barrel stamp. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If it's unmolested, still 7,5x53.5 (GP90). I'm sure somebody else will chime in but the design was changed to the forward locking lugs in later models for a reason - no convesions to GP11 for the 1889.

As always condition is everything and pictures help lots.

Those rifle use the earlier cartridge 7.5x55 but with bullet diameter of .299 inch instead of the later 1911 load with .308 inch. The action is supposedly not as strong as the later versions with front locking lugs. A friend of me have 1 but have been sporterized:mad: he dont use it. When reloading for the 1889, you must use proper .299 bullets and the load is not the same as 7.5x55 1911, the later loads are too powerful for the 1889 action. The fellows experts will come with more infos i'm sure:)

CAUTION: DO NOT shoot the M1889 Schmidt-Rubin using standard 7.5 x 55 Swiss (GP11) military surplus ammunition. Refer to collector feedback in the MKL entry.
