.375 rifles anyone???

The only real reason I went with the .375 Ruger over the H&H is the rifles it is offered in.
To me the 1-H and the MK II magnum are better suited to the .410/.411, .416 and .458 cartridges.
I think the 1-S and the MK II standard are a better fit for a .375, and if you want a .375 in those rifles, it's a .375 Ruger.

I didn't have the rifle in time for moose last fall, but I took a couple of whitetails with it.
I used 225gr Hornady IL's at 2700 fps, which pretty much duplicates the 150 gr IL from a .308 win, just with a little more girth. SD and BC are almost identical.
Recoil is mild and on whitetail performance was great.
This coming fall I'll be using it for moose with 260 gr Accubonds at about 2800 fps.

Ardent go to Zim or wherever you wish to go. Follow your desires. If it is not right I am certain you will recognize such and depart.

Best not to listen to others. For all you know they could be spouting advice obtained from a magazine in a dentist office.

Nice #1 Moose Masher..
I agree with you about the 1H's as being to heavy in the .375 caliber..
I have a #1H in .405 and if I keep it I will either have the barrel turned to a slimer profile or rebarrel it to a slimer profile..
It's a real pig to handle now..
Just like most of the bolt actions chambered in .375 H&H's..

You owe it to yourself to wrap your hands around a Sako AV chambered in 375 H&H. The one with 22" barrel. It is a friggen awesome handling rifle, especially with open sights.

TMG,
Same here >>> to many guns...
I can imagine that your Sako is a nice rifle...
A lot handier than my H&H's
With only moose and elk at less than 200 meters where I hunt a .375 H&H or .375 Ruger is not needed..
I prefer light weight rifles myself something on the order of 7# for a medium bore unscoped..
A friend at a gun show down in the lower mainland just found a M70 SS Classic for me this morning and I will have it rerbarrelled to a .35 Whelen, 20" Fwt. contour with a front sight and rear peep..
With it's factory stock it should weigh around 6 lbs. 12ozs.
Perfect rifle for this old man shooting cast boolits for the duration don't ya think?..
:)

A classic and a good choice. Recently, I went in a similar caliber direction. One of the three Schultz & Larsens I've wanted for quite some time is the 358NM but when Why not? offered to sell me a very nice Husqvarna in that caliber, I couldn't resist.

For the open sights and also cast bullet shooting moments of choice, my plan is to go with the following.

TheLeverfamily.jpg

  • Winchester model 71, 348WCF.
  • Marlin 1895GS, 45-70.
  • Marlin 444S, 444 Marlin.
  • Marlin 1894, 44-40.

And, after a long hard look and evaluation, I guess it won't be too many years before I start 'thinning' the ranks a little. ;)But not quite yet:p.

Spent my life living that way, there's always somebody certain what you're doing is wrong or they know better (even I with regards to deer shot placement... I'm the dark side there). I've yet to have a 'regular' job and have received literally hundreds of these same kind and well intentioned warnings. In the end, you make your calls, and do your thing.

Africa

You guys are gonna cost me money. Its not the 375 H and H or the 416 Rem mag that is going to cost me. I am starting to read everything on Africa I can get my hands on. I am starting to get a fever to go. It may be possible!

I've had the same "fever" off and on for over 30 years. Worse now than ever, maybe becuase I'm over 50. I would miss the wife and kids though!

Our Daughter and Son In Law went for just over a month last year during which time my wife and I had the pleasure of babysitting/spoiling our three year old Granddaughter. They had quite hunt experience, a couple of weeks on plains game and a couple for the more dangerous stuff and he posted the experience on this site.

Other than plains game it's not really a hunt item at the top of my list. I'd be more inclined towards an Alaskan hunt but I don't mind reading some of the hunting accounts from Africa. A friend has lent me a few books along that line and I've just finished Death In The Long Grass - Capstick and I've now started on White Hunter - J.A. Hunter. Interesting reads I must admit.

My .375 H&H. Just a sweet heart to shoot, always feeds, and accurate enough even with factory ammo. I am trying hard to justify a .375 ruger as well. I like the shorter barrel options, but really haven't had problems with the longer barrel.

:)A side issue but it seems as though we sometimes use a similar backdrop for photos:).

Yes a .375 H&H for more than 30 years now. Excellent caliber for everything. Today a Sako 85 SS. Nice lightweight rifle that is very accurate and well build as all Sakos.

I really wish it were so, sometimes the truth isn't what we want to hear.

It's really sad the potential in Africa that is wasted, but perhaps it's because it hasn't been exploited that gives it it's charm, something the Chinese will be fixing in short order.
