Damascus?

cat - I suspect that W. Richards might be William Richards, a quality Birmingham maker. Didn't Westley Richard use his full name?

If it is an original Westley Richards shotgun, from any research I have found the name will be spelled out in full, not abbreviated W. Richards. I also believe the location of where it was made in England was also stamped into the barrel if it is original.

Jeepers, tough crowd of internet experts here today.
I've done a little reading over 20 years of collecting these guns too, but it doesn't take an expert to read "Westley Richards &CO." on the side lock.
You may not be able to see it clearly, but don't worry about it, it's not for sale.

Cat--I didn't mean any disrespect and I wasn't referring to your gun in particular, just answering a question that tiriaq asked. My eyes though cannot decipher the writing on the sidelock in your photo; hurts to be getting older.

It's not you or your eyes it looks like Ricky Ricardo to me. I wasn't aware that he was a Gun maker :).

Sorry, non taken, forgot to put the ":D" in there!
And Win/64, Ricky Ricardo was the head gunsmith for CBC in South America before he went to work as the production lead for a well known American gun company, just before all of their QA fiascos!:ban:

So it was R. Ricardo who put the kibosh on Remington's QC. I'll bet he sold all their secrets to the Chinese. If Lucy only new what that little Cuban was up to.

So that's another to put in the "check the maker's name" book!
Lessee, R. Ricardo, Ricky Ricardo, John Manton, J. manton , A Zoli, Antio Zoli, crap there's so many of them i think I'll just stick with a Parker.
DANG!! I have "Parkers" downstairs!!
And of course one has to watch out for the "Brownings" with Belgian proof marks - I hear that is where the old ones were made before the modern Japanese ones with the better steel!:D

I have a Zoli & Figly Sidelock.
Wasn't it the Parker Brothers that invented Monoply? Did they make Guns too?

Hey Cat if it's not too much trouble could you post some pic's of the water table and barrel flats of your Westley Richards? They have always been one of my favourite makers.

I'll have to get a buddy over with a better camera and better skills than I have, but sure, I can do that !!:D

To those who insist on shooting shotguns with Damascus barrels, I can only wonder why. Of course, there are those who ride around on bald tires and smoke while refilling propane tanks. Remember, you can only spin the roulette wheel so many times before zero shows up. It is your life (and body parts) but please do me the favor of not shooting one around me; my first aid skills are a little rusty. Once again (with feeling): "I would rather be careful a thousand times than dead once" - Mark Twain. 'Nuff said (for those who adhere to college-level thinking).

I would like to thank you for your posts. The continued spread of this information increases the likelihood I will find a fine gun with Damascus barrels at a deep discount price because you've helped various dumbasses believe every gun with Damascus barrels is a ticking time bomb.

Keep up the good work. :)

This same sort of information has helped keep the price of Ross rifles down. And here I thought that college level thinking rejected the concept of prejudice and sweeping generalizations.....

Cat -thanks for posting the second photo.

This is the same guy in another thread that said somethhing about balance and SXS guns not belong in the same sentence , then went on to try and explain by comparing a 2X4 to a dowel, now this?
The mind boggles at times.
