Sights for a service rifle

I hope you lot aren't getting sick of all of my questions.

So far, based on the input from this forum, I have;

1. Purchased a new Stag AR-15 (from Arms East; great guys!)
2. Purchased a half-dozen pmags (from Questar; again, great service)
3. Purchasing a Tac-vest (I think I'm going with the TenSpeed from One Shot)
4. Figured out what ammo to buy; waiting for some of the usual suspects in the banners above to email me back with quotes).

Now for the next item; Sights.

As I have mentioned before, I don't want to spend too much on my rifle before I get shooting this spring down at Borden. I'd like to try things out before I drop a bundle on upgrades for the rifle.

That said, my Stag comes with a Troy Industries Rear Folding Sight, and nothing else.

Should I add any optics to this before the carbine clinics this April?
 
Im in the same boat as you, putting together an AR and hopefully coming out to some of the matches. Good purchase on the stag, and buying new you have a nice warranty.

Which AR optics? The absolute best 1x optics you can get are the aimpoint series or Eotech, which ever you prefer. They are good for the CQB matches and from what I hear, up to around 200 yards or more if your proficient.

If you want a magnified option, the cheapest method is the millet DMS 1-4 at under $300. Then you can buy a mount for it on the EE or from arms east I believe.

Although I am a noob to these matches as well, I think you are going to want an optic if your participating in the service rifle matches, but hopefully someone more experienced will chime in.

Do you have a handgun covered as well? It seems like these things really do add up dont they?
 
Iron sights are fine for CQB... at least when you are learning the game.

Scope is almost a must for Service Rifle.

Sometimes you can run up a bigger bill trying to save money buying cheaper stuff that you need to replace.

The Falcon Menace is a good cheap scope and Hungry did a nice write up on it.

Frontier Firearms also has the Millet, but it did not review as well as the Falcon ;)

Also agree with Beltfed (below), if you stick with CBQ and wait a year for SR.
 
Shoot for a year with irons.
You'll learn a ton and valuable skills that can't be had using optics.
You'll get to see what is working for others.
During that time you can save for a quality optic that fits you and the style of shooting you do.

Even if you do decide to take the plunge right out of the gate, it is always good to keep a percentage of your shooting practice with iron sights.
 
A low powered scope will be just fine. There was a nice sounding, used FM 1.5-5 in the EE this past week for $220 delivered. Reasonably priced lower powered variables will work well for all ranges. Repeatable elevation adjustments are important.
An Eotech is a great opportunity to accessorize your rifle. You will need back up irons, the Eotech being battery dependent. Having no magnification, you will be able to get the add-on 3X magnifier to make it somewhat useful at other than close ranges. An ingenious solution to a problem that need not exist in the first place.
 
I shot my first year (Service Rifle and Service CQB) using an Ar180b and irons. Learned many valuable skills from doing things this way. Now I'm running a Swiss Arms and ACOG (2 years later). If you're wanting an optic that will be good for both disciplines, you'll be looking at something with a lower fixed magnification (around 3x or 4x), or a low variable magnification (1.1-4x, 1.5-6x).
 
It really does depend on what you are planning on accomplishing.

ACOGs are nice, but can be pricey. I personally wasn't a fan because I had problems with using the tiny reflex sight that was on this particular model. Then again, others loved it.

I really liked the EOTech, and I was able to hit out to 300m. Just had to aim high. The big problem I had with them is the reticle. When shooting at range, the circle with the dot in the middle would cover the whole target, and I always had to adjust the brightness or else that was all I would see through the glass.

I'm an aimpoint kind of guy personally. It only has a dot compared to the EOTech's reticle, and leaves more visible through the actual sight. I also like it over the EOTech because I used a spacer to make it sit higher on the rifle which is more comfortable to me. I don't know if EOtech's can be equipped with a spacer (They probably do and someone on this forum could definitely let you know). The battery is like a large watch battery which can be hard to find at times, but I've been using the same battery for over three years now. Much longer that the EOTech's battery life. It can lead to less Situational Awareness (SA) since you are basically looking through a scope. Not so much an issue with the EOTechs.

You would need a seperate magnifier for the EOTech or Aimpoint if you are shhoting at anything 200m or more away from you, so the ACOG has that advantage. But it all depends on your budget and personal preference. Try other people's sights and see what you like. It's the best way to find out.
 
CQB is quite nice with the Elcan actually. I've tossed around 100 times whether to switch.. think I'll keep it.

Although PobCat here has the one other one I would consider moving too ;)

I'll let him tell about it as he's used it.

I do like the Falcon Menace as well, and may use one this year for a while.

Hi Lux CMR 1-4, amazing optic, runs about $420 to your door. It has the external target turrets and zero stop which is a very nice touch :D Amazing clarity, all in all a great optic at a great price. Wolverine supplies (top banner)

Also look at the Votex Viper PST 1-4X24, it's very nice and cheap too.
Has a really groovy recitcle!

Maybe I should drive down to Borden some weekend and have a look at the sights you guys are using.

I think I'm going to put off buying one until I've shot with the iron sights for a bit, and have gone through Barney's carbine school.
 
The ORA is having a Plinking day at Langemark on March 19th. If you are a member of the ORA, you should be able to get a short term ATT to come down with your rifle and see what is up. Even if you came without your rifle you would be able to check out what guys are using.

Try a PM to Hungary and see what can work for you.
 
I'm conserving cyber-space by reusing this thread...

I am going to keep running my irons for CQB for at least another year (until I can finish in the top 5, at least...)

My question is this; what is a good mid-range scope JUST for Service Rifle? My eyes aren't great, so I'd like lots of magnification. I was looking at the Hi Lux 1-4, but I would like something with about x7 power at least.

The second part of my question; I want to run the same rig for CQB, and just want a quick-detach mounting system for the SR scope. Is there actually a system that locks positively enough to maintain accuracy at 300+ yards?

Suggestions?
