I'm a little unclear if I'm allowed to use the thinner factory aluminum grips for IPSC production? also i am a lady with smaller hands than the "average male hand" that just about every pistol is designed to fit.i find i have a tough time reaching the mag release because the stock grip seems to be in my way slightly.would these help?

The thin aluminum grips are produced and sold by cz, so they are legal, as well as the aftermarket grips of the similar profile, as Walter already pointed out.
If you can find someone around with thin checkered aluminum grips, better get those. They are thin and provide better grip then the flat ones.
As for the issue with the mag release. You can try to shift your grip a little when reaching gor the mag release button. A bit of dry fire practice will make it the same speed as without shifting grip.

Just to confirm what others said - yes and yes.
You may also find mag release somewhat stiff, it can be adjusted so that it requires less power to operate too, but you'd need a smith or someone who knows what they are doing to adjust it.

if you are having problems hitting the mag release button use your left hand. as you drop your left hand from the gun, punch the mag release button with your left thumb then let the hand continue on to the magazine for the magazine change. it is slightly slower but quicker then have to shift your grip twice.
You are right about slower, but it is definitely not quicker then shifting the grip. Several top Open and Standard shooters are using this technique on the large frame guns and it works fine.
Easy as pie... I ran that config with my M&P9 and Shadow for the longest time but I've switched back to the thumb side as I was getting tired of letting the RO know that I use my trigger finger to release the mag so they don't DQ me for having my "trigger finger on, what may look like, the trigger".
If you get them, get the full checked so you don't have to bother with grip tape. But if you feel you need a bit of extra grip then you can add a strip of grip tape to the front and back strap of the grip.
Depending on the technique you practice. If you are gripping your Shadow the proper way with both hand you can press the mag release with the meaty part of your palm, the area below the thumb, just before you begin to reach for a fresh mag from your holster. It'll take alot of practice as it's a bit slower but you won't change your grip with your right hand by doing so.
I had the same problem with the stock rubber grip on my spo1 shadow. My thumb is a bit too short to actuate the mag release. I found some checkered aluminum grips here on the eq exchange (basically new). Like everyone else said get the checkered ones they are very grippy and will make your hand a bit sore after a bunch of stages but you will not loose grip even with moisture on your hands. Ok for ipsc already said. Another thing to consider is changing out the factory main and recoil springs. This is Production legal, cheap and makes a huge difference. For those of us will small hands the dual action trigger pull gets much easier and more impotantly has less travel so it's easier to reach. If the mag rel is still hard to hit I just flip the gun a bit to the side to changer grip then while slamming the mag home let that motion re seat my grip properly again.

I bought a shadow for my son which had the alum grips. He has long fingers and the grips were to thin to grip the gun properly. I did not like them either.
I put the mag release on the right side of the gun and use my right middle finger to drop the mag. I have short fingers and could not reach the button without changing my grip or using my left hand to push the button. This works on my open/ standard gun also, and I never have had my middle finger go near the trigger. I know a guy who tried this with his trigger finger and was DQ'd more than once for finger in the trigger.

As far as mag changes go, if you can't reach the release with your thumb, then flip the gun slightly and press the release while your other hand goes for the mag and brings it back.
This is the only fast way to mag change. As far as releasing the grip, so what, most of your grip is from your weak hand and you have to release that to reach the mag.

I have some thin grips from CZ and they are too thin. The cheapo plastic ones from CZ where my goto grips back in the day. However I'm looking for something in the middle for size thats really gripy without adding grip tape. Suggestions?
I have big hands and longish fingers. I run the thin grips from CZ. Never dropped a mag by accident yet. Its all about gripping properly. That's not to say thick grips aren't better for some, but they aren't a cure all either. Agree with Ipsik on how to hit the mag release too.
