Hey guys, first time poster here.

Well I have been looking for a rifle to take camping with me that will be inexpensive and a great time for everyone shoot. That pretty much spells out a .22 to me. After looking at all the different .22's out there (ie. Ruger SR-22, Remington 597 VTR, Mossberg tactical .22) I have decided that a Ruger 10/22 with a Nordic Kit is the way I want to go. Smaller initial investment that I can go as crazy as I wish to with all the completely unnecessary toys. As I say, this is not going to serve much of a function other than just being fun. I am determind to build a tactical .22 that I can take with me to shoot in the bush that will be completely legal in canada.

So, that being said, finding a ruger 10/22 is not going to be a problem. I have however had a bit of a time finding the Nordic Kit to buy online. I'd like to stick with Canadian websites as I am not to familiar with buying these kinds of things online and don't know how it would work bringing in tactical style gear across the border.

Does anyone have any input? This is absolutely foreign territory to me so any input is going to be appreciated!!!

Thanks fellas!

Welcome BRP...
Save yourself a lot of grief & time and just buy a Ruger SR22.
It's a Ruger 10/22 with a Nordic shell that's all put together straight out of the box.
Have fun!

As far as I know the Nordic kids are very expensive .......... I would just buy the Promag Marauder kid if I was you .......... oh, I did that already ... just waiting for it to get shipped out :D

The only thing with the SR-22 is that your going from $249 for the 10/22 to $569. I don't mind putting in the time to find the parts. I kind of see this rifle as I project I can work on over time.

I've looked at the Marauder. It looks mean as hell! But I like all the different options with the Nordic kit. But by the looks of it would it just be easier to switch to the Archangel kit?

BRP....

A brand new bottom of the barrel 10/22 carbine out the door, tax in = $280 (if it needs to be shipped add $20 -$25)
Nordic bare bones kit shipped = approx $200
Total = $480 - $500

THEN you will need:
Heavy barrel (optional but recommended) $100 - $175
Forearm & endcaps - $75 - $300
Buttstock (extension tube, spring etc) $60 - $300
Pistol Grip - $20 - $50
..and maybe a couple other small items (picatinny rail etc)

See what we mean? ;)

Don't get me wrong, I totally understand what you are saying. But there are a couple of things about building it that appeal to me.

1. You can mix and match so many parts that it can be completely yours. You can make that gun look however you want...within the range of parts available to you.

2. I don't need to pick it all up at one time to still be able to enjoy the rifle in the process. I don't need a heavy barrel right away, and I could pick up a cheap stock untill I found they style that really appealed to me.

So I still think I'm set on starting off with the Ruger 10/22. Even that will be fun to enjoy as it begins.

Thanks for the input fellas!

BRP, I really have to concur with Wham-O here...
Just cuz you start with the SR, doesn't mean your finished... It's just a MUCH more sensible starting point.
I bought my SR about 8/9 months ago.. I get new parts in the mail every second week or so and it's like christmas all over again! woohoo! strippin' down my rifle tonight baby!
If you wanted some other stock/kit, cool, but if you want a nordic, jesus man, defying logic and reason will have consequences :stirthepot2::bangHead::ninja:

Just remember the more you put into such a gun the more you will loose if you ever try and sell it ......... no matter how cool it looks nobody will be willing to pay $1000 for a 10/22

I finnished my Nordic just before the the SR22 came out, at first it cost about the same. If you got the time and patience go Nordic, then you will have somthing different from the same old SR22. I collected parts for a winter, so it took a while to complete. I did spend a little more than I wanted after buying extras but its a keeper. Also check out 10000cool (google it) I have ordered from him 3 times without any problems!!

I don't think people plan on selling a gun down the road before they even have it...just saying...

Word. I have absolutely ZERO intention of selling this gun. That being said, you never know what happens down the road so you can't rule anything out. But I'm not looking to put in a ton of time, money, energy and heart just to sell it.

My good lord, that is one ###y lookin' .22! What were the websites you used to buy the parts? That gun is an inspiration, sir! That sight set up is AWESOME. I will check out the hawktecharms.com. Now when you bought the parts, did you buy them all off canadian websites? If I bought parts for the rifle (aside from clips and ammo) off websites from the states is their much hassle bringing it across the border?

My good lord. Who would have thought buying a .22 would be so hard! ha ha ha. My logic behind the 10/22 was that I could change it into any type of style I wanted. I could start off with an AR style and if I get bored of that, down the road I could pick up a different kit and switch it up to something else with having the option of still being able to switch back and forth. But it seems like the overwhelming response is to start off with the SR-22. What are some other kits aside from Nordic and Archangel? Am I being a bit unrealistic with my goals of starting with the 10/22?

This is all VERY new territory to me. Its not something I plan on picking up this month...more like I'd like to have a basic set up for mid/end of summer. I'm not overly "gun handy" so I kind of saw this as a good start to have fun and get familiar with playing around with a rifle.

You guys are being a huge help though and I appreciate all the input! Thanks, fellas!
