Aussie looking to hunt Ontario in May

You would have to go to North ON wouldnt' you?
Any special tags or things you need to do to hunt them?

Would be good to hunt them as we do not have them in Oz. We have wild dogs that are either domestic dogs that have gone feral or dingo's that have breed with wikd dogs to make a mix.

Lots of Coyotes in southern Ontario. All you need is a small game in the south and they're open all year.

In the north their are wolves which you need an additonal tag for. The season ends March 31st..

Ontario is a big province, so seasons vary pretty dramatically as game populations vary dramatically from one end to the other.

Resident costs are much lower then non-resident costs

Off the top of my head

Roughtly $40 each for deer, bear, and moose

$20 for small game (game birds and rabbits mostly)

$30 for turkeys I think (no open season where I hunt so I dont bother with them)

As your a non ontario resident you won't be able to buy anything at resident rates. There was a story in a Ontario Out of Doors last year. You have to live in Ontario for 6 months or a year straight prior to the date your buying the licence and have proof before your giving resident rates. Even if you're from Ontario it doesn't mater, if you haven't live in Ontario for that certain time before the date you buy the licence you'll be charged non resident rate.

The story was about a son who wanted to come back to Ontario and hunt with his father but had been gone from Ontario and working in another provinvce. When he went to buy his licence he was charged non residents. The MNR said he wasn't living in Ontario for the previous time frame and was classed non res. If I can find the story I'll post it.

Yep totally understand that I would expect to be paying something for a license of some sort. Just wondered how it worked for the locals.

Yes I can see Ontario is a huge place - I have only really seen the very Southern parts at this stage.

Most game in Australia other then Deer are all classed as a pest so you can hunt them at any time without a special licence, other then your firearms licence of course. Native animals are another story and you cannot hunt them with the exception of Kangaroo but you need tags or be a pro shooter.

If you're in the Toronto area, stop in at Bass Pro Shops. Its worth as a gun store is debatable, but as entertainment its pretty good. Lots of really nice full body mounts of Canadian Wildlife, and an aquarium with a lot of our native fish species

Rabbits were here in massive numbers back in the 90's it was a ball to hunt them. With the release of the calicivirus a lot of the rabbit numbers dropped in my common hunting areas. They are starting to come back now with better seasons.

Hares are about but not as common just depends on the area. Foxes and wild dogs tend to keep the number down though.

Yes I know Bass Pro and have been there last trip in late October. We have nothing like it in Oz! So was great to see. I wll be looking to stock up again this time around too.

It does sound like good fun and would love to get out on a hunt!

We have Turkey in Australia but they are small and not able to be hunted.
They are known as Brush Turkey.

I can hook you up for with the names of a few outfitters in Manitoba and Saskatchewan but they're fairly costly. If you have some extra cash to spend though, a spring bear hunt over bait is an experience youmight not get another chance at. Alberta allows 2 bear tags but it's further away and I only know 1 outfitter there. BC is a spot and stalk hunt as baiting is not permitted and would probably be the most expensive hunt. You guys just have so many options for game that is so different from Australia! I look forward to getting out there.
