Hey guys,

Is this a weird bubba job, or something more peculiar?

Although it was common to remove the bridge when sporterizing Enfields, scalloping the rear of the receiver like that I haven't seen. What did the former owner use for aiming ? I see no sights, no holes on the left side for side-mounted scope bases and the receiver ring is not drilled and tapped for a base.

Do I see Long Branch markings ?

Perhaps someone was turning it into somekind of target gun? Looks like a heavy barrel and with the sights removed, perhaps the next step was to drill and tap it for a scope.

The bbl has just been cut back to where it looks heavier.

Whoever did the work, knew what they were doing. It was finished nicely and makes a pretty sporter. It just needs to be drilled and tapped for a side mount. Should make a very decent hunting rifle. It is in No 4 MkI* configuration but it has an early stock, that has the low cut out for the mag cut off. The receiver isn't milled for it though.

It isn't worth a lot of money but it's a lot nicer than a lot of sporters I've seen made up from milsurps. That didn't happen in an hour, one evening in the basement with a file and a hunting knife. Some serious grinding and milling took place there.

Spend some money and get a side mount for it and scope it like it was intended to be. It will make a great hunting rifle, capable of taking any game in North America.

That is a great example of what a skilled craftsman can do with bit of paitience and the proper equipment.

If you want the strongest mount possible

Go to 303 british dot com and find the indestructable scope mount. cheap as dirt but stupid strong.

I agree, that is as nice a looking bubba as I've seen. Get or make a nicer stock for it, find a 5 round flush fit mag, slap a scope on and go hunting. Did anyone notice a hole in the rear, scalloped part of the receiver? Is that leftover from the bridge? Or is it some kind of bubba angle iron super scope mount hole?

I seem to recall seeing a flush fit, Mauser style magazine kit available for Enfields...

That's the rear sight plunger hole, or rather, what's left of it.

The Parker-hale side-mount base will fit as will the jobber ones sold in Canada by Vezina in Quebec City. Because the bridge is gone, forget about the Adv Tec model or the Weaver TO-1.

The P-H mount in the pic fits No. 4's that had the bridge and rear sight removed. Unlike pictured here, although it did fit, it's not the correct mount for this rifle. The recess at bottom of mount should have fit over the ejector screw.

If the fore end is tight, just leave it alone. I wouldn't spend any more money on it, other than to have it drilled and tapped for a scope mount then put a scope on it. The side mount pictured, is a very good mount and tough as hell. Many mounts for No4s are mickey mouse and to light. The 10 round mag doesn't hurt anything IMHO but if you really want a 5 rounder, just trade it for one. They run about the same price and it should be a straight across trade.

Many curl their noses up at such rifles. IMHO, someone liked that rifle well enough to spend a lot of time on it. It is probably a decent shooter as well. If the fore end has dried out and shrunk, you may want to glass bed the ways and other contact points.

Shoot it and enjoy it. There are many here that would love to have such a rifle. Light, handy and accurate. You can't ask for much more.
