I have lived in Brantford ONT over 20 years. Went to school here. Have owned guns since i was 16...yet never had a good place to hunt or just plink at pop cans except at a club...i love the outdoors and believe its far more fun...
here is my question to you friendly folk of GCN.
Can anyone here share a spot for safe shooting? i have small game license and a lot of experience with firearms civilian and military...I would like to go coyote, rabbit or duck hunting with someone can teach me or just let me use their property to learn. I have .22, 410 and 12 ga...still looking for a .243
I realize its a lot to ask as a stranger but i have no options. Suppose best thing to do is to meet and have a talk over coffee and break the ice. I promise there will not be any attitude present...well except when we are talking about gun control...
Please PM...help if you can.
thanks all

I hunt in the Brantford area, but its on a friends farm. There doesnt seem to be any good public places to go, or if there is I dont know about them. Theres some game preserves for Pheasant around.

I've asked this question as well. The feeling I got was all the good spots are kept secret so they don't become over run with shooters. Good luck!

It`s likely hard for you guys in heavily populated areas. Where i`m at it`s pretty easy to go hunting. I`ve gone hunting some days and never seen anybody, and if you do you probably know them and stop to spread the bullcrap a little.

I'm In Brant County. And yes, unless you own land or have been friendly with people who have land, chances are it is going to be tough. I just go into the local Tim Hortons and chat with guys. After a couple weeks of chatting stuff pops up and you will realize that once they know who you are are and what your intentions are most seem more than happy. Just a bit of advice.

Yup, just go out there and present youreself as a hunter.

Most farmer/ landowners will listen to what you have to say, specially if you want to shoot coyotes, and the other game can come into play once they get to know, and trust you.

Just come across as a good guy with some backbone.

Best of luck getting permission.:)

if you guys want to hunt just drive down to lake erie there is all kinds of land open to hunting lots of deer and turkeys all public land . long point conservatin DUTCH

Look for crown land (MNR Forest land) or on the Grand River Conservation Authority website for areas open for hunting. Also, just drive around and ask, that's how I get a majority of my waterfowl fields or new deer spots. Check for the farm operation near the land you want to hunt, most farmers these days either own or rent 1000-3000 acres. As Dutch mentioned Long Point area has lots of areas for hunting. Not many grouse anymore, but lots of field geese! Also European Hare (jack rabbit) are making a come back.

Its not that they are secret.....its that their is very little public land in southern ontario.

If you want public land (crown), go north. The only problem is that it is easier said then done for many people. If I tell them to go to Parry Sound and find Crown, they havent the foggiest idea how to do it. Some guys dont even understand the concept of Crown land. Ontario has thousands upon thousands of acres of Crown in the north. A lot of which is accessbile within 2.5 hours drive of TO.

thank you guys for all the help. I will take all advice i can. Imagine that three of my neighbors are hunters...we have helped each other whenever was necessary. I have repaired a .22 for one, another pulled my truck out of the mud, we have shared viewings of the rifles we own, drank beer and yet they will not share one single spot they have for hunting after they said they would take me along even just to watch. One just said to me plainly..." I have done so much door to door knocking that i just cant"
Well i get it.... So much for gun owners sticking together. I did ask few people but most are uneasy letting stranger onto their land...especially if they had done it in the past and idiots put holes in their barn or left a mess or they heard of such happening to other people. Its so hard for new hunters..

i really like the European hare...they can be quite a size compared to rabbits original to this land...
How do i go about finding the areas around Long point? its a bit of a drive but definitely worth it...

Another tactic you can use is to join the OFAH and automatically get liability insurance for when hunting. Show the certificate to landowners. Start driving from Brantford south and west of hwy 24(?) hit all the back roads and you will be surprised how many forested MNR tracts are around. There are quite a few around Simcoe to Delhi. It's kinda of a grey area, but if the land is not posted, you can't find the owner, and no one has told you to leave, are you trespassing?

Ya, you probably are then. Really?

Yes you absolutely are. Suggestions like this are what stop responsible hunters from actually getting permission.

Oh and ignorance is no defence
