I would like someone to explain to me the difference between the 1911 and other semi auto pistols. Thanks for your help!!
hi,
welcome,
have you even tried googling it?
the 1911 design is well documented.
h ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1911_pistol
for starters.
Go take the RPAL course...you will learn the fundamentals of pistol actions - single action vs double action vs 'safe' action etc.
Then when you get your RPAL you can actually buy one!
Thanks. I do have my RPAL. I'm looking for someone to expand on how the 1911's design differs from other semi auto's. I know the 1911 is a single action, recoil operated...etc (from reading the wikipedia entry on 1911). So other semi auto's are single/double action, or double action only? Can be gas or recoil operated?

That is an incredibly broad question. The 1911 is the same as every other pistol, except when its not. In fact one could say that every other pistol is the same as the 1911, except when they aren't. See, the generic "1911" category is huge. There are Single Action 1911s, Double/Single and DAO as well. As a rule, the 1911 is operated by a delayed blowback action, except when it isn't, like in .22 versions, and fixed barrel "match" versions, where they are simple blowback operation. One could also argue that (though not in the firearms world of definitions) that the 1911 is Gas operated. Ultimately, the expanding gases and cartridge act a a gas piston assembly forcing the slide back to eject, feed and fire a new round. By the same principle, one could argue recoil operated. However, grounding the terms in the firearm world, the 1911 is absolutely not Gas or recoil operated. Gas operation would imply that the firearm will only cycle if the gas system is currently active. If one were to remove the gas system on such an arm, it would only function as a straight-pull bolt-action firearm. Removing the "gas system" on a 1911 would render the firearm inoperable, because either the barrel, slide, frame or live round would have to be removed from the equation.
The only truly "gas operated" handgun that i am aware of is the Desert eagle, which uses a gas channel/tube drilled into the frame to move the slide which actuates an AR15-esque bolt head, allowing the gun to cycle. This is only practical because the .50AE cartridge that the DE was designed around is far too powerful to safely and effectively fit into a delayed blowback design.
Hope that helps.
P.S. The design is not different, really, the 1911 series of handgun is just Badass. And reliable.

My bad dude..... insert foot in mouth.....thought it was another one of those random COD elite operator noob threads at first (ie what's the scariest rifle I can take to school with me)
Cheers
