I currently have an early model K98 (RC) with no sight hood and a flat butt plate, I also got a muzzle guard for it. One problem....I like the look of late model K98's a lot more. I like the cupped butt plate in combo with a sight hood and am thinking of posting a K98 swap on the EE.

Would a straight up trade be a fair deal if they were in similar condition? Or is one considered more valuable than the other?

Most RC's had mis-matched stocks, therefore many early RC K98's that should have flat butt plates have cupped butt plates and vice versa for older K98's.

What year is your K98? What producer? Once you know that, you can figure out which stock should be on the rifle.

You very well might have a K98 that you could always through a cupped butt plate stock on and the rifle may be more visually correct.

RC's are a collectors item in their own right, but since the Russians messed with them so much, most collectors don't mind people enhancing them (adding sight hoods, cleaning rods, removing the shelac etc). As long as you are not trying to pass the rifle off as original, try to restore it to original condition.

Cupped Butt plate stocks can be found for about $90-120 at the right source.

You might be able to get a straight up trade. Most RC's are worth as much as another RC, the only exception would be a rare code (bsw, etc) or rare markings such as "ssza", deaths head, or single rune. Some RC's are the only authentic SS marked rifles out there.

No RC is ever the same as another. If you have a 1935 dated receiver, you wouldn't expect to trade it straight up for a 1940 dated example all other things considered IMO. The earlier the receiver, the more desirable it would be. Same goes for late war phosphate receivers and/or parts(i.e. 1945 dated) as production came to a halt near the end. There are many more factors to consider but you get the idea.

You may just have a collector out there with a few too many mid to late war Kar98ks and is looking for an early dated example.

With that in mind, what is the date and maker on your kar98k ?

Mine is dated 1940. and the maker is Oberndorf. Also the Swastikas have not been removed. I agree its a challenging trade... but I think all of those factors are good selling points for my rifle. Now I need to decide whether or not to go for it.
