DPMS vs Norinco CQ

So I've been looking at some cheaper AR's that are available, the cheapest being around $700 Canadian, which is the Norinco CQ. After searching some more I discovered the DPMS ar's, the cheapest of theirs also being around the same price as the Norinco. I was specifically looking at the Panther A3 Lite 16. Despite being nearly the same price, would I notice a difference in quality if I were to buy the DPMS? Are DPMS ar's pretty solid guns?

Another factor that is making this a difficult choice is that a store in my city sells the Norinco CQ, and they can give me a military discount. The Norc would be easier and cheaper to get, but I am concerned about quality.

I owned a DPMS and it worked fine man. I liked it, would get a DPMS over a norc AR anyday. Have you maybe thought about neitarms thread? (I think its neitarms) they are getting canadian made AR's for under a 1000$. Maybe you could throw that into your think tank as well.

But as far as DPMS goes, they always worked fine with me. Can't talk about norc AR's since I never really owned one for long (like 2 weeks)

Where did you find DPMS AR-15's for $700? Phil.

From the wolverine Supplies site, I used the link to the DPMS website, and if you look in their 5.56x45 section, they have a whole bunch of ar models, alot of which are under $1000

Tough call but I might lean towards the nork myself.

"the chart" doesn't list the Norinco, of course, but here are some of the features common to Norincos which DPMS rifles are typically missing:

chrome bore
m16 bolt carrier
m4 feed ramps

those are features which are pretty critical IMO. Of course some DPMS guns might have them, but generally not. Further to that, Norinco does actually build actual issue rifles - in fact they build issue versions of these rifles for, I think, Paraguay?

Not that the Paraguayan armed forces would necessarily be a great litmus test for a rifle...

Anyway the point is that Norinco does have a history of building good small arms of other types, whereas DPMS has a history of building "entry level" ARs with issues.

So if I had to pick between these two I'd probably get the Norinco, knowing that it wouldn't be as good as a GOOD Western manufacturer, but that it might well be better than a low end one.

It's a bit irrelevant in Canada seeing as 99% of us own range toys and nothing more, but if you're interested in quality for quality's sake, say, or you have one reason or another to want a gun that will not let you down, then a good starting point is the US TDP for the M4. It specifies a whole bunch of requirements for any rifles built for service, and meeting or exceeding the TDP is a condition of their contracts.

So using the TDP, you can evaluate commercial rifles as well, if you like.

DPMS deviates about as far from the TDP as any commercial manufacturer (using cheaper components in all cases). I have heard horror stories about two other manufacturers building worse rifles than DPMS, but I have no experience with either of them and I would guess very few Canadians would ever run across either of them. So for our purposes, describing DPMS as the bottom of the barrel is probably effectively true if not strictly accurate.

What do you base that conclusion on? besids the price tag?

there was at one point a chart put together comparing m4geries to an actual milspec m4, it was made by some industry guys over on m4.net and DPMS was (along with OLY) the farthest from the m4 in terms of quality, keep in mind the guys making this chart werent arm chair commandos that only put 1-200 rounds through their ar in a year at a range but guys that actually USE their guns. As mentioned above the norc (especially the CQA the new ones) have important features that the DPMS dont like chrome barrels and m4 feed ramps
