Cooeys in .410 - 3" Chambers?

If it is not marked, you must assume that it is 2 1/2, or have the chamber measured by a smith.

Thats what I would have thought, other then the guy who I got the gun from gave me a handful of 3" shells and said "thats all I have left". He doesnt own any other .410s

Edit - I put one 3" in......it easily fit.

A 3 inch will fit but what is important is that there is enough room for the shell to open without folding into the bore which is a smaller diameter.

Sometimes one can get away with firing a longer shell in a chamber designated for shorter. Do you feel lucky?

hmmmmm, research seems to indicate that they are capable of handling 3" shells. This thread indicates as much.

If it is safe to use with 3 inch ammo it should be marked as such or confirmed by a measurement of the chamber. The one poster on this thread who said that the gun is chambered for 3 inch may be right...... or not. Your gun does not say 3 inch and so far I do not think the chamber has been measured? It is still your choice.

I have the model 84 in .410. It also does not say on the barrel for 3". I bought this from a gunsmith though and if I remember correctly, I believe he said it would take 3". I have not shot any through it though but if I plan to, I will measure the chamber first to be sure. Because as mentioned, the 3" shell will fit unfired. Problem comes in once it is fired--no room left to expand.

It was suggested in another forum that I find a similar sized dowel, pen etc and build up the diam. with tape to .410 size then stick it down the chamber. When it gets tight measure it.

Any reason this shouldnt work?

All Cooey models 84. 840 have 3" chambers, Cooey never chambered for the 2.5" 410 cal. The only gun they made ina 2.5" was an experimental bolt action, very rare to ever see one other than books!

My Cooey model 840 specifically says chambered in 2.5 " and 3" on the barrel.

Here's a 2 1/2" chambered old friend that has accompanied me on many Moose trips, close to your neck of the woods, Wells. This old .410 Ranger sits on the dash of the truck for ditch chickens, usually returning to camp from the morning or evening search for Moose. It's supplied us with a lot of Ruff Grouse for camp meat on our trips.

Mine does not. It has Cooey 840 on side of the receiver, and Winchester Western - Made in Canada on the other. The barrel has "Proof tested - .410 Full Choke"

Thats it. I stripped it down to see if their was any other marking under the stock - nothing.

I went through this last spring with one I bought with no markings. I took one of the spent
3" shells from our other single shot 3" .410 and tried to put it in the chamber. It would go in all except for the last 1/4". I confirmed it was a 2 1/2" chamber only.
You may get by shooting a 3" in a 2 1/2" but for how long and to what detriment, I don't think it's worth the gamble.

What I did was wrap a pen with masking tape to the same diameter as a .410 shell, then insert it into the chamber. I got it in 3.25 inches before it hit the forcing cone.

Hey John, that's a great old gun. Glad to hear you're still knocking birds over with it.

I picked up a MEC reloader for .410 almost a year ago .. OK actually OVER a year ago and I still haven't had time to even crank out one shell .. sad sad sad. Gotta get going on it. I have lots of 2.5" and 3" hulls, wads, shot etc, everything needed .. just not the time yet.
