Anyone have experience changing out the upper on a CQ311? Will any after market stripped upper work?

Where in Canada to purchase after market stripped uppers? Looking for a A2 style replacement.

What part of an AR is the restricted part?

Thanks,

M

I put a Yankee hill upper on mine without any problems

Looking around, flat tops appear to be the rage. I shoot mainly service rifle with open sights. The A1 without adjustable rear sight for elevation is a bit of a nuisance. Just want to swap the upper and use the Norc upper parts, bbl etc and add an adjustable rear sight.

Any suggestions?

Any issues bringing in uppers from the US? Is $250 worth the cost of a complete upper (less bbl) v.s. $100 for a stripped upper?

Thanks,

M

If you intend on using the chinese barrel you will need to get a north american barrel nut, the chinese one for the 311 is a metric thread, otherwise it will work just fine!
Getting the front sight pins out could be quite the chore as well!!!

That's interesting because the barrel nut from my cq311 worked fine

"Fabsports got a stripped A2 upper on sale for $119."

Just ordered this! What have I gotten myself into?

Metric bbl nuts?

The CQ uses metric pitch threads in some places... They obviously have metric machines in China and Norinco tried to duplicate the inch threads as closely as possible but they are slightly off... I fitted my CQ with a collapsible stock at one time and the threads did not quite match and I had to do a lot of screwing and unscrewing to basically wear down the threads and match the tube and lower! On somme CQ, the threads have to be redone with the proper tap...

It would be easier and better for your new upper to buy a new inch threaded barrel nut... Not that expensive to begin with! The barrel nut is what holds your barrel in the upper... The barrel itself is not threaded.

Total damage came to $400. $100 for the upper, $100 for all the upper bits including the sight and $200 for the smith to install it all and test fire it. Did not have to change out the bbl nut.

Hmmmmm I just spent $400 on a $600 gun:eek:

Interesting day at Service Rifle today

New A2 style upper. Love the adjustable sights, however had two of these?

Upon inspecting the new upper discovered this (see arrows):

This is the original upper (ya I know poor pic, but note there are no upper grooves):

Having said all this, it was the first time I used my own handloads. Been shooting PMC factory to this point in time, with no issues.

Soooo, is it a rifle issue or a hand load issue?

Cheers,

M

It looks to me that you bought an upper with M4 feed ramp cuts but your barrel extension only has the standard cuts. That could cause some problems with feeding. Do you have a better pic with the bolt removed?

Here's a guide of what it should kinda look like...

Ooooops, now what should I do?

The gunsmith that installed the upper for me, never mentioned this!!!!!

A pic with the bolt removed.

Thanks, for the new pic. Please don't take my suggestion as the correct explanation for your problem. But your pics certainly suggest that this may be the issue. I'd ask the gunsmith if the barrel extension is a proper M4 configuration. If not, then get him to fix it.

Oh great, another money pit.

Guess I will take it back to the smith and see what he suggests. A M4 bbl extension costs approx $25, no idea what the labor would amount to.

The A2 upper has already cost me $200 in smithing charges, but I'm 90% convinced that $150 of that was due to him not knowing how to assemble the sight.

BTB: I supplied the upper. Had no idea this was going to be an issue. An AR is an AR right:rolleyes:

And I was so enjoying this rife:(
