90% of beagles will hunt, no matter the breeder. Hunted parents or not. It is more about how the puppy is brought up. The first 6 months are the most important.Getting them out in the field is up to you.

If you want some assurance of breeding quality look for CKC registrations. But, I have owned oodles of hounds (walker, blu ticks, beagles), none with CKC and they could all hunt.

I currently have 3 beagles of various pedigrees, I don't hunt any of them, but they will if I let them. The oldest is 11 and has no pdeigree other than looking like a beagle, her stature isn't quite right so I never bred her. The middle one is 8 years, UKC registered, she is too leggy and has a bad back. Once I saw she was not to standard she was fixed as well. Both will hunt but age and years of trying to break them of chasing mean they are only good for short runs. I give them free reign on the local red squirrels which keeps them happy, but they leave the deer alone (mostly).

My youngest is 5 years old is a CKC standard, no papers but she could have been registered if the original owners had wanted the papers. She has all the right dimensions and is a very nice dog, she is also fixed. She loves to hunt, much to my constant irritation and exercise chasing her around the concession when she makes a breakaway. I got her as a rescue and she came from Manitoba and the name Branco was mentioned. Her one medical issue that just started this past fall is she has seizures, only 2 so far in 6 months but not a good sign.

Not sure any of this helps, but its a slow day at work so I had the time to write it. Well, time for coffee break.

Thanks for all the advise on beagles, I have owned 4 and hunted all of them. I understand that they all will hunt.

I am allowed to be selective and choose to deal with respected breeders who have given so much of their time to the breed that I love.

Some beagles do have a better chance than others...

Just simply stating all "beagles will hunt"....yes they will, but that is not what I am after. I am looking for a breeder who is in it for the right reasons.

I have a 7 year old Beagle from Branko beside me right now and 2 1/2 year old snoozing on the couch. Branko's Beagles are by far the best in Canada and likely top 3 in North America.
I have been to his operation it is something to see.

Branko and Frieda are very carefull breeders and their results prove it.

Thank you Weldboss, nice picture, beauty dogs!

My only concern now is the shipping of the puppy, I have never been a fan of sending dogs on an airplane.....anyone have anything to share about dogs traveling on an airplane, I have no experience.

Thanks

Nice looking Beagles. Branko must be breeding 15" I guess judging from the height of yours in the photo. I'm down to just one Beagle now. I had to put my pack leader (best damn rabbit dog I ever owned) down the September before last. He wasn't papered, but his nose should've been. Had my oldest female pass away at age 10 from Cancer. Her mate, Blue never got over her loss and I had to put him down just a few months later. Just 'Rainey' left, she's a cross between all three dogs. A good hunter, but not the super star her grand dad was.

With three Labradors in the house, it might take some convincing to add a pair of Beagle pups to the mix anytime soon.

For the orignal poster, if you aren't familiar with Beagles, I strongly suggest you find a hunter in your area who is a good dog man and who has trained his dogs well. Beagles can be headstrong and will hunt pretty much anything if not taught properly. Getting them in the woods with a good older dog is a great way to let them learn the ropes and get a few starts on some bunnies without them getting too confused or distracted by all the other really interesting scents they'll find. You don't want them running deer, 'coons, moose, etc...unless you do, of course.

I am the original poster and have had 4 beagles and have hunted over beagles for well over 20 years. I understand what I am getting into and I live for it, I love it, I guess you could call me a beagler...

Were it me Greg,I'd take a road trip.
Time and distance permitting,I'd pick that puppy up if possible.
Best way to start that kind of commitment is in person imo.

Good luck,hope it works out.

I used to ship a lot of dogs by air--even sent one ole hound to Japan. Never had a problem. Baggage handlers prolly don't care much about your stuff--but everybody loves a dog. It was pretty reasonable too.
