7.62x25 wouldn't be good for much... 7.62x54R can take pretty much any game in North America.
So... Which 7.62 are you talking about? x25, x39, x51, x54R? Are you talking about the 7.62 family of magnum cartridges (300 Win Mag, 300 RUM, etc.)?

I'd hazard a guess that the vast majority of large game has been taken by a .30 cal bullet of some description or another.

I have a Mosin Nagant...its chambered in 7.62x54R...anything in N.A. It will take down.
7.62 Nato is pretty much a 308 Win. About as close as the 223 and 5.56 Nato.
308 is a pretty decent all around tool especially if you are not sure what you want. Seems to me you can use domestic in a military gun but not usually the other way around.

Ive got boxes and boxes of FMJs marked 7.62x51 (7.62NATO) / .308 WIN and have shot them out of my .308 with no problems.

I have a 308 and was told by a dealer that mil ammo can sometimes be either a bit thick or a tad on the hot side. Figured it not worth the risk especially since I did not find any at the time to shoot. Mil brass is typically thicker too so since I reload it doesnt matter any more. That was from Lever I think. Then again maybe they wer BSin me too. Wouldnt be the first time. Either way 308 is a real handy cal to play with. Excellent for deer and black bear even moose Im told. I would take the 30-06 along for that ride though.
Which is a 7.62x63mm round! ALL of the .30s are 7.62mm.

Not quite. Using 150 gr bullets, the 30-06 has ~100 fps and ~160 ft-lbf on the .308 Win at the muzzle. Mind you, the increase in performance is marginal, and at 300 yards, the 30-06 only has ~1" less bullet drop than the .308.
i was going to say that the DEALER was a bit on the thick side- and it's other way round- 308 win is loaded just a tad hotter than 7.62- at least in ww748- mean velocity is about 2550 for 7.62x51, using 175 grainsmks- factory 180 for 308 winchester is 2610- so 308 is loaded just a tad "hotter" than 7.62, given almost identical bullet weights

Man of the F, 7.62 x 51, or 7.62 Nato, is the military designation. Sporting arms, which in Canada as a newbie are the only kind you will be able to purchase are designated .308 Winchester. The cartridges, while not identical, are almost universally accepted as interchangable. But in the gun store, if you ask for a 7.62 (whatever) you will get either a 7.62 x 39, the Communist medium caliber of AK/SKS fame, or perhaps some guy will try to sneak a 7.62 x 54 by you. If you ask for a .308, or more properly, a .308 Winchester, you will get a modern firearm in a versatile cartridge, available in bolt, semi, pump and lever guns, capable of dispatching all of North America's big game.
Many will dispute that last claim, and certainly purpose bought, single species rifles are a common symptom amongst those of us afflicted with gun lunacy, but we have to keep telling ourselves that we really NEED that .416, or .404, or .458, or .30-378 for gophers. Otherwise, we have no reason to haunt the candy shops.
