I need a new extractor on my competition 1911. Any thoughts about replacing with aftec? i have heard all the reasons why they are supposedly the best, i am just wondering, from experience, if any of you out there swear by them, or are they overpriced and unnessesary? considering i can almost buy 4 les baer or wilson match grade for the price of 1 aftec.

Tagged for interest. I've been curious about Aftec extractors as well. I'm very interested to hear some first hand experience with them.

Here's my .02 . My open gun was giving me all kinds of misc problems making it hard to diagnose. I was told to try a new extractor but I might have to spend some time tuning and polishing and bending..blah..blah... the extrator. I decided to try a drop in extractor (Aftec) and the next mag and aprox 15000 rounds later I have had no issues. The satisfaction of having a competion gun run problem free is priceless. I wouldn't even hesitate to buy one, its the best $100 investment you can make and no gunsmith/guro needed.

Aftecs are the best, period. As Hungrybeagle noted, I won't use anything else either.
Buy with confidence, get it fitted correctly and you will be very happy.

okay, seeing a trend here. Thanks a bunch guys! "The satisfaction of having a competion gun run problem free is priceless" man you have got that one right.

seems like anyone who has used one has never looked back. now because i like being the devils advocate, lets hear from someone who absolutely hates aftec. (unlikely, but jsut asking)

Aftec require fitting? I thought they were a 'drop in' part.

It needs to be fitted mostly in open guns for consistent extraction and ejection so the brass does not hit the regular (not canted) optic mount where most open guns are mounted with C-More sights.

Standard 1911 & 2011 should not need fitting or at least you can get away from having a gunsmith fit it for you. In my experience I replaced the extractor of my standard gun 2011 without fitting and it works flawlessly.

ALL of my pistols are fitted with AFTEC extractors.

Hungry... and Relliot are not just plinkers... they are top practical shooting "enthusiasts".... :) I agree with them... AFTEC or nothing!!!!!!

if your installing an aftec in an SVI make sure the extractor doesn't hit against the barrel. The spring should be replaced or tuned to give the needed tension once it starts loosening up. SV's are not designed to run with aftec extractors, but with some tunning you can make them work.

As an aside, while the aftec is simply the best extractor around, it will not fix problems that are related to improperly fitted ejectors or other parts that are out of spec/not fitter properly.

The problem you relate is an ejection problem, not an extraction problem. That is related more to the angle cut on the ejector as opposed to the functioning of the extractor.

thanks a bunch guys! proper gun function in a match is almost the most important thing in my life at the moment. heh so i appreciate the advice. aftec all the way!!

~~~happiness is a warm gun~~~
The main part that needs to be fitted correctly is the firing pin stop. It has to fit in the cut on the extractor properly. The hook needs a bit of attention in my experience just like any other extractor.
well this opens another can of worms. My firing pin stop has been removed, would you think that may generate issues, because as you noted the extractor is held in place or at least "allined" by the firing pin stop.
The guy who sold me the pistol commented on how "firing pin stop is just another part that can break" so that was his reasoning for the removal. any thoughts?
that would make more sense... in that case i don't think it would make a difference, it doesn't affect the extractor.
