Why are there no Cartridge Companies in Canada?

Hamilton, Ontario; the southern shore of Canada.
The United States, Great Britain, and many European countries with populations smaller than Canada have their own cartridge manufacturing companies. What the hell is wrong with us? We can't even make firearms unless it is under licence and then only to the military. Small specialty firearms manufactories do exist though but nothing like HK, FN, Remington, Winchester, Colt, Puma etc.

What is the problem in Canada?
 
We are lazy, and we dont believe in ourselves.
Stand by for all the "We are too small of a market" excuses.
 
We've had ammunition makers in Canada, but we saved ten cents by going to Walmart and Canadian Tire rather than support Canadian jobs. Now we don't have any.
 
We had Para-Ordnance until they moved down south. We had IVI that used to make ammo for the civilian market but they stopped selling it here when SNC Lavallin bought them out. Now the factory is owned by General Dynamic, they produce ammo mostly for the military market but still make small runs for the civilian market. It's not being sold here in Canada for reasons still unknown to me.

Predominately made in Quebec or WERE made in Quebec.

The market is large. Small European countries; why is their pop small yet their market is large enough? Canada's pop was smaller when we had cartridge companies; our pop is larger now and so is demand so how does that make the market smaller? When will our market be large enough to justify having our own cartridge companies?
 
We also had Canadian Superior Shotshells manufactured here in Edmonton. He was gearing up for small cartridges with an eye on rifle cartridges when the whole "toxic lead" thing hit. He didn't have the customer base to support him and his fight. It had nothing to do with toxins from lead, it was anti-gun movement with an agenda.


Either way, we lost an ammunition maker, and the Anti-gun movement scored a point while everyone else was saving ten cents at Walmart.
 
Challenger produces ammunition in Canada.

For the most part it is just too hard to compete against the large United States ammunition companies here.They have most of the market here and for them to suppy the Canadian market its just a matter of an extra shift or two.A Canadian company starting out has to build a plant and also get a following to purchase its product.

And whined and demanded a coupon for a truckload of replacement ammo when we found one 22lr out of a 1000 that failed to fire.
 
I would also suspect that our government regulations are not easy nor cheap to navigate, since NRCAN seems hell bent on making importing of ammo nigh impossible. The anti-gun bureaucrats fight us everywhere, all the time.

Bull####. But hey. Nice try.

The list posted above were pretty much all tied up in theDefence Industry, and if you look into it, I think about 3/4 of them were either directly or indirectly owned by the same outfits over their lives. They were all bought, absorbed, or evolved, into the others on the list.

Most were gone before CTire existed, and definitely before Walmart came to Canada.

They got out of it for the same reason so many industries went away. They were not making the money that they desired, so went on to other things. Or they were eaten by bigger fish...

IVI is still making CF ammo, but I think it's owned out of the US now. Dunno if they are operating here or not.

To the best of my knowledge IVI is now owned by the American company General Dymanics and only produce ammunition for the military.
 
Weren't the ammo/gun companies strangled out by the Libs. over the years, the same as shutting down the refineries in Montreal?
 
There are thousands of us running our own small scale ammunition manufacturing plants..
We're called "reloaders"
